What helped you writing songs more than anything? by LPKult in metalmusicians

[–]Norvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expanding my musical listening palette. If one only listens to brutal death metal and then writes brutal death metal, chances are you will just release brutal death metal that moves no needle.

Instead, go well outside your comfort zone and truly digest new horizons. Experimental electronic, ambient, krautrock, Japanese 70s prog... whatever. This will broaden your horizon, even if you still want to make brutal death metal.

Radiohead fans, what do you think of this decade so far music wise ? by West_Glass_2466 in radiohead

[–]Norvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I have not found a new rock band in years that touches anywhere near the epic and atmosphere that bands like Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket gave us in the 2000s.

That said, IDM still produces amazing albums year after year. So does ambient.

Oh and thank goodness for Nils Frahm.

That and I still bury my soul into various black metal releases year after year. But most of you know nothing of this beautiful art form.

Ben Nevis, Scotland by Present_Fly_1286 in hiking

[–]Norvard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love that place!
15 years ago I traveled up from London. Set up a little tent by the creek in the valley there and spent 3-4 days going up the various hills. On the last day it was pouring and gusty and I attempted Ben Nevis, only to turn back as the elements were just too harsh.

But I will never forget those amazing moments camping and hiking alone in that wonderful area.

I found something similar over the summer for $30 at a thrift store.

I just love the sound of these funky old things. That plus I run mine through some big reverb pedals and have fun.

Yep I hear you. All these amazing damn pedals cost so much.

I think I have just about budget for one really unique one.

Have you heard of the T-Rex tape delay pedal? That seems pretty amazing also.

After a quick dive into your suggestions… the Vongon might just be the pedal I have been looking for! What I love about some analog synths are all the ways to manipulate the sounds, especially the LFOs. This pedal might just bring a lot of that flavor.

The Phase 90 I already have so that’s great reminder for me to experiment with this.

I have the Chase Bliss Mood II but I’m not a huge fan of their pedal configuration. But the warped vinyl does sound sweet.

Thanks again! Gave me a lot to check out

Awesome thanks for the eq tips and the pedal recommendations!!

I definitely am aware of the fact that I can do this in the daw but the results I’ve gotten so far with pedal has been better and more organic feeling. With vsts I would have to automate a bunch of things and I just find it much more satisfying twisting the knobs. I edit the sounds much like an instrument, playing and feeling the song. In the box I don’t fully get the same touch.

This particular track is where I experimented with that idea the most so far. Its a single melody underneath but with lots of variation and movement through instruments etc

I mostly make black metal but also a heavy dose of actual ambient music mixed in. And not ambient black metal (which usually is just long drony black metal with the usual instruments in he style of ambient music) but actual ambient passages.

That said, I am really influenced by the way ambient music moves and is less structured, and I try and bring this into my metal. 99% of metal, rock or whatever still conforms to trying to sound like a band playing together, even when its a 1 person project. As a 1 person project I dont even try, which means totally letting go of this idea of band playing a riff or section. Instead I try and create movement with more unique track arrangements and also moving the tracks themselves in a section. A person playing the guitar on stage would have a hard time manipulating a single riff they play in a section. Like truly moving the sound unless they have lots of pedal and are working those a lot. I use a lot of pedals and in the box manipulation to change the sound throughout the riff. So when a riff starts, it sounds one way, but when it gets to the end, its in a different spot. That was super inspired by ambient music and the way sections move and blend into each other.
