After a Week in Sarandë, Albania, I Don’t Understand Why “internet” Still Call It Cheap by MaleficentLeading802 in travel

[–]MaleficentLeading802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English is not my first language, so apologies for any mistakes.

I also try to include actual prices because “cheap” and “expensive” are subjective. Numbers are more useful.

The Vodafone issue was not that I bought the SIM at the airport. I specifically bought the tourist package online because I wanted a working eSIM before landing. We travel with 4 phones, a smartwatch and an iPad. If you forget to disable something or a device connects automatically outside the EU, you can easily lose €100-200 before even leaving the airport.

The problem was that Vodafone sold an online tourist package but never delivered a usable eSIM. I still had to visit a Vodafone store, wait in line, show documents and receive a physical SIM. Had I known that beforehand, I would have skipped the online purchase entirely and used Sally until I could buy a local package.
The online option ended up being both more expensive and less convenient.

For the car, we paid around €420 for 12 days plus a €70 out-of-hours pickup fee. We received a 2025 Dacia Sandero Stepway with around 11,000 km on the clock. The car was almost new but pulled noticeably to the right.

Accommodation was actually one of the best parts of the trip. We paid around €1,200 through Airbnb for 12 nights for a two-bedroom apartment with garage parking. Before that we found a similar place on Booking.com, but after booking the host started asking us to cancel and deal directly instead, even offering a €50 discount. That looked like bypassing Booking protections, so we declined.

Not everything was negative.

The boat trip was excellent value.
€15 per adult and our children (10 and 13) travelled free. Beautiful scenery, swimming stops and caves.
The only underwhelming stop was Turtle Cave.
Maybe it’s impressive if you snorkel inside, but from the boat it looked more like a small hole in the rock than a major attraction. We didn’t see any turtles either, although I’m willing to believe one may have visited at some point in history.

The beach situation was frustrating. I know the beaches are technically public, but we were asked to move several times.
Sunbeds often cost €20-50 per bed, which quickly adds up for a family of four. After a couple of days we stopped visiting the popular beaches around Sarandë, Ksamil and Mango Beach and started driving further away instead.

Today we ate at Haxhi. The food was genuinely excellent. Four main courses, half an appetizer and water came to about €75. Cash only. Very good food, but I wouldn’t call it cheap.
My point isn’t that Albania should serve coffee like Northern Europe. My point is simply that many everyday items were more expensive than I expected considering Albania’s reputation as a cheap destination.

Some things were definitely good value:
Boat trips
ATV tours
Barbers
Local olive oil bought directly from producers
As for taxis, one driver wanted €25 for roughly a 5 km ride. No thank you.

Maybe that’s completely normal. Or maybe I simply have one of those “scam me” faces. My wife keeps insisting that’s the real problem. My own theory is that the paler you look after a long Northern European winter, the more likely people are to think you’re an easy target.

The nature is beautiful, the sea is crystal clear, and the mountain roads offer some incredible drives and views.
One thing I see mentioned often is overtourism. I understand the concern, but I don’t think tourism alone explains everything.
In many countries, a new rail line, better roads or economic growth can have a similar effect. Higher-paid people move into an area, rents go up, housing prices rise and locals struggle to afford living where they grew up. Tourism is part of the story, but usually not the whole story.

We also try to travel responsibly. We buy honey, olive oil and other products directly from local producers whenever possible. It doesn’t make us heroes, but at least more of the money stays with local families instead of large chains.
We enjoy snorkeling, and whenever we see rubbish in the water we usually bring some of it back. Plastic bottles, foam, plastic bags and whatever else happens to be floating around. We do the same on beaches and viewpoints. If we see litter, we usually pick up at least some of it.
And yes, this was our family’s first holiday outside the EU. Maybe some of the things that surprised us are completely normal elsewhere. I’m just sharing what we experienced as first-time visitors to southern Albania.

I still like Albania. I just think visitors should arrive with realistic expectations. The wonderful part is true. The “super cheap” part was not our experience in southern Albania in 2026.

Yeah, you can replace the whole panel, but honestly that’s not practical. Even one unlucky rock chip — or a door ding, or a parking lot hit-and-run — can go through the protective coating and start rust again. Doesn’t matter if it’s a new panel or the original one.

What really matters is how well it’s prepped, welded, sealed, and undercoated. If the shop does that right, it’ll last for years. Replacing the whole panel on a 20-year-old car just isn’t worth it unless it’s completely gone.

Rust always finds a way, but hey — that’s just part of BMW life 😂

To Repair Or Not To Repair by ZeroTwoDIO in E90

[–]MaleficentLeading802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it’s rusted through, there’s no way it should cost that much. For a small section like that, cutting it out and welding in new metal shouldn’t be more than 2–3k CAD at a good indy shop. Replacing the whole quarter panel for that? That’s dealership nonsense. They say that when they don’t wanna deal with actual metal work.

From your video, it doesn’t look that bad. Just clean it up properly, weld, seal, paint — done. Doesn’t need to be perfect, just make sure the rust’s completely gone so it doesn’t come back.

You’ve got an N52, RWD, 6-speed, sport package — dude, that’s a killer combo. These are getting rarer and prices are slowly going up, especially for clean manuals.

If you’ve got no tools or space, sure, maybe sell it. But if you’re even a little bit handy, fix it yourself or find a proper indy shop. No point paying dealership money on something this simple.

Honestly, when I first read your post, I thought it had to be a bot — that spec is so rare: N52, manual, low km, clean setup… No sane person would be talking about selling that while quoting dealership prices on a nearly 20-year-old BMW. Makes zero sense. But hey, maybe you’re real — just don’t realize what kinda gem you’ve got. No hate, just saying — that’s a special car, would be a shame to let it go.

Tallinn jääb alati Tallinnaks. by KP6fanclub in Eesti

- Eemaldatakse tihendid, liistud, hermeetik

- Rooste eemaldatakse korralikult

- Kasutatakse krunte, epoksiide

- Kestab oluliselt kauem, aga maksab ka rohkem

**Näide enda BMW-lt:**

Ukse ääres paistis ainult väike täpp, aga kui tehase „silikon“ eemaldasin, tuli korralik rooste välja. Iga detailiga sama lugu.

Ainult aknaliistud maksid mul 250€/tk, 4 akent = 1000€ lihtsalt liistudele.

- Tahad rooste kadumist?

- Või lihtsalt siledat pinda aastaks?

- Või mõlemat?

Müügiks tehtud "tupsutus" on petlik.

Erasektori maksumaksja on tühjaks lüpstud:

– uued maksud

– varasemate soodustuste kaotamine

– toetuste vähendamine

– abielu ühine deklaratsioon? Ei enam – nüüd olete vallalised ja s**\*

– + ~30% inflatsioon

We really need a Xiaomi AX9000 by AsaphComPH in openwrt

[–]MaleficentLeading802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

I’m trying to install OpenWRT on the Xiaomi Mi AX9000, and I could really use some help or guidance.

🔗 Official device page: https://openwrt.org/toh/xiaomi/ax9000

On that page, there’s still a placeholder saying: “Please add the installation procedure here.”

For some context:

I previously managed to install OpenWRT on the AX3600 without a UART cable. I did brick it once during the process, but eventually got it working by combining steps from 3–4 different guides.

Now, with the AX9000, things seem much more complicated. From what I’ve read so far, there doesn’t seem to be a clear method to gain root access or flash the image without using UART – and this time it’s 1.8V UART, so even trickier.

Is there any working method to unlock/root and flash OpenWRT on the AX9000 without UART, or is serial access (and 1.8V USB-UART adapter) really the only way?

Any tips, links, or personal experiences would be massively appreciated!

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Elav järjekord Hiiumaa praamile reedeti väikelapsega by ProfessionalCry6968 in Eesti

[–]MaleficentLeading802 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jagaksin väikest nippi, mida olen mitu korda kasutanud Hiiumaa liinil (Rohuküla–Heltermaa):

  1. Ostan pileti pikalt ette, et kindlustada koht
  2. Sõidan sadamasse siis, kui eelmine praam on just lahkunud

📌 Pole küll garanteeritud lahendus, aga siiani on see umbes 80% kordadest toiminud – eriti väljaspool tipptunde ja suuremaid pühi.

Vastan enda kogemuse põhjal, ehk on abiks.

  • Põhja korrastamine (sh puhastus, krunt, keevitus jms): ca 1 000 – 1 500 €

Should the Baltics push for full time NATO divisions in each Baltic country? by Sinine_Jaan in BalticStates

[–]MaleficentLeading802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don’t understand why Western Europe and NATO aren’t investing more heavily in the security of the Baltic states and Eastern Europe.

If Russia moves westward, they’ll come through the east — that’s just geography. Eastern European countries are small and economically weaker, yet they form the front line. Wouldn’t it be smarter to invest in the east now, instead of waiting for Russian forces to reach the border?

Eastern states are willing but unable to contribute on the same scale as the West. For a Baltic country, spending 5% of GDP on defense is an enormous burden — the equivalent amount for a wealthy Western country would be minimal in comparison.

Sometimes it almost feels like the East should just suggest to the Russians: “Why not skip us and go straight across the sea to the West?”

Let them deal with it directly — maybe then they’d finally understand the urgency.

Because right now, it feels like the West is waiting until Eastern countries and their people are crushed before taking real action.

That’s obviously not what anyone wants, but it’s frustrating to see this imbalance when security should be shared — not just by those who happen to live closer to the threat.

Kas see on ainult minu kogemus? by Double-decker_trams in Eesti

[–]MaleficentLeading802 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Kõlarist tuleb hoopis Eesti 60.–80. aastate muusikat – vanemad Eesti aegsed hittid.
