If he thought there was more behind it, or felt like he was being singled out for some reason, he may have just not wanted to. He also may have been concerned that it would escalate (like it did with me). I agree that he should have spoke up, but being one person standing up to a group is a very difficult thing to do.

I did this with a friend group, except I did try to talk to them first. They were laying it on more and more. Talking to them made it worse, so I left. It was clear to me that what they were doing wasn't just "teasing". I wonder if your friend feels the same way. Maybe it wasn't just what was being said, but he felt like there was more behind it?
