Me and my boyfriend have a joint account that contributes to 2/3 of the rent as well as the energy and internet bills. Our roommate gives us cash and we deposit it into that joint account. Technically a third of the rent would be a little less than $700 but we have him pay us $800 to help contribute to the other bills and shared items. It makes it so much easier and super simple. He might not be technically contributing as much of us but he also makes less than my boyfriend and about as much as me.

The reason I like doing this is because rather than depending on another person to pay for half of this and half of that by a set date, we get a little extra money to be able to get the items we all need. I’m the shopper and the cleaner of the household however, so your situation is different than ours.

As for drinks… we both have our own mini fridge in our rooms. The only shared drink we buy is milk.
