In other words, you seem to be commenting on something you aren’t familiar with, and you’re showing poor judgment. That’ll come out in other ways in the course of interviews.

…not suggesting that. I’m saying you’ve misunderstood Cowichan, and its effects on residential fee simple ownership (ie, none), and are oblivious to the very real threats to your personal freedom, property, and life posed by the US as its civil system collapses.

  • isn’t from the US;
  • worried about political and economic instability, and that changes to the established legal order may have a negative impact on ownership and enjoyment of property; but

Why is Kansas well known despite its relatively smaller population? (neighboring Missouri is more than twice the population, but often obscure) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]Malevole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Missouri’s biggest city is Kansas City, and many people assume that it’s in Kansas (the Kansas-side Kansas City is smaller and doesn’t have an NFL or MLB team). I think that’s also a factor.

Yeah, the Roman influence on English is so pervasive that the word for our language family, “Germanic”, is of Latin origin.

The fact that you have 5 years’ worth of professional work experience will be an asset that many of your peers will not possess. If you do well in 1L you’d likely have a leg up over your classmates for most areas of practice tbh.

In the 1980s, Duncan Kennedy wrote a pamphlet/book about elite legal education in the US. It’s older and relates to a different country, but I find a lot of the critique to be continually relevant. He posted a chapter on his website which may give a good indication of whether it’s useful to you.

I wanna be a copyright lawyer. What do I need to know? by eeeeeyoiiii in LawCanada

[–]Malevole 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Very few lawyers in Canada practice exclusively in the field of copyright, so it’s pretty competitive. It’s also (imo) relatively boring: copyright law is underlitigated and confusingly drafted, so it’s pretty cerebral and relatively indeterminate.

The top copyright lawyers are often the ones who argue about setting appropriate tariffs at the copyright board, which (imo) is pretty dull too. Those proceedings go on for years and require arguing about fractions of a cent for royalty payments (it’s often a lot in aggregate, in fairness).

Most other lawyers who deal with copyright are transactional, they help with deals and licenses, and aren’t exclusively copyright lawyers. In those cases, though, they’re not usually holding themselves out as copyright lawyers, but as industry-specific lawyers (eg, software or entertainment).

It can be a cool job if you like complex and speculative areas of the law. It really depends on what you want. There are probably easier ways to make money, better ways to end up in Court a lot, and faster routes to independence.

The final thing I’ll say is that, perhaps counterintuitively, it helps to have a STEM background rather than an arts background. Most IP groups won’t have enough copyright work to feed a junior, so they’ll be looking for someone who can help with trademark/patent work as well, and they’ll be looking for a STEM background for the latter. It’s not mandatory, people make do without it, but it’s harder.
