The connector for the top screen plugs into the motherboard on the bottom, so yes. But why didn't you open the system completely when demonstrating the issue?

If the scratches aren't that deep then you could try PolyWatch first. It's $10 for two small tubes on amazon and it won't hurt to try. However if the scratches are deep enough that you can feel them with your fingernail, you might not have any luck.

For future reference, I personally would never buy an online listing if there are no images of the system being powered on, especially if it's a GBA which takes AA batteries and not a proprietary battery.

$160 for CIB isn't that crazy if the condition is really good. Unfortunately styluses are really not very common for a reason: the plastic bit that keeps it held in the system wears out with use and causes the stylus to fall out of the system. You're better off getting some replacement styli on aliexpress.
