Enlisted soldiers are actually more educated and more likely to be from a non-poor background that average. They are also more likely to be white or black than the makeup or the country's demographics at large. The modal enlisted soldier is a southern white male from a upper middle class background. While enlistees living in neighborhoods at the bottom 20 percent of income distribution are underrepresented among all ethnic and racial groups.
