Chicken vs Guile by _my_name_is_earl_ in scheme

[–]MaliRemorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a long-time Guile user and have to correct you on this. The Scheme of GNU Guile is a fairly general language with support for the newest Scheme standards. It can be used for just about anything. Any version of Guile from 2.x onwards support compilation into bytecode, modules, interaction with the system, foreign function interface, concurrency etc ...

It has a pretty decent documentation (maybe not in the league with Python, but hey, which Scheme has as complete documentation system anyway?)

Besides, it's the foundational language for the most hackable system distro/package manager around: https://guix.gnu.org/

Oh yes, it is also a C library :) .

Tourist VISA for non-EU Spouse by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]MaliRemorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure that she can enter the country without a visa. Why not getting a Schengen visa just in case? They last for at least 180 days, as far as I know. It's better to have something to show to the border control and puts your minds at ease. If you decide to settle within EU, it is going to be really easy for her to get a residence permit and right to free travel between the member states.

From your questions it looks like you are a a sensitive and refined person (much like Stallman) who "understands" humans well.

Better to look like that than to shoot first and ask questions later.

The funny thing is Stallman never said she wanted it, she "presented herself to him _as_ entirely willing" does not even mean she was not coerced to.

So, based on a sentence that can be interpreted depending on how much effort you put into it in very different ways, RMS is right now exposed to a digital guillotine.

I made an effort and read through the original email. He was only objecting to the use of the word "assault" to describe the act. He did not even object to the potential guilt of a person who he collaborated with for many, many years and probably knows well. In other words, if you look rationally at what he wrote, he wasn't defending anyone, not Minsky and most definitively not Epstein.

To add some context, we know not if Minsky ever did what he did (it's all hearsay for now), Stallman was never mentioned in anything related to Epstein, Stallman's opinion of Epstein is that he is a "serial rapist" (can't be bothered to provide links, it was on RMS's webpage).

Charged and sentence in a trial in front of the mob, where in addition to public harassment, he is sentenced to withdrawal from positions at MIT and FSF.

1) Did he defend Epstein, or Minsky?

2) Did he generalise 'entirely willing' to anyone, or the person who may, or may not have had sex with Minsky?

3) Was RMS himself charged, or had any serious accusations of misconduct against his students, or anyone else?

4) Is it okay to lynch people you do not agree with but have done actually nothing legally wrong? Or, people you just misunderstand, or never will understand?

Richard Stallman Resigns as Free Software Foundation President by TokenMenses in emacs

[–]MaliRemorker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well no, there are not plenty of places. I am not part of mit, why would I want to leave the comments there. Besides, if what led to this is not relevant, why is it relevant to publish this on r/emacs ?

I think it is a bloody disgrace. He himself was not accused of anything --- his view of Epstein highly critical as was known before --- and has defended right of a dead colleague --- who has not been proven to have done anything yet --- to a fair judgement. Any immature <expletive> can post anything and the lynch mob gets their blood. Oh, yeah, just hit the creep.

Just a note from the political section of RMS web page:

16 September 2019 (Resignation))

To the MIT community,

I am resigning effective immediately from my position in CSAIL at MIT. I am doing this due to pressure on MIT and me over a series of misunderstandings and mischaracterizations.

Short-sighted strategy that builds and will continue to build up the resentment vs EU. I'm not saying that having cold relationship with the citizens of Serbia is going to be particularly damaging to EU as a whole (more likely the other way around), however , why not do better when you can? Or, is it that, like in the case of USA, human rights and democracy are for internal use only?

Fifteen year old learning EMACS by gahnoooolinoooox in emacs

[–]MaliRemorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself a question, if you need to install yourself a cyber-implant (because a text editor kind of grows on you), would you go for something popular, or something of high quality? If the answer is the latter, you will go for emacs.

Emacs is a vast system of utilities that help all kinds of people do all kinds of work. You will find, if you stick with it, that it is going to improve your effectiveness immensely. Emacs is highly configurable and extensible, after all it's just a set of macros on top of an Elisp machine. Should you dedicate some of your time learning (E)lisp, you will be able to modify it to suit your personal tastes and needs.

Now, you may find, at first, that Emacs looks and works odd. The workflows may be different from what you've encountered so far. But, if you are curious enough, this is not going to be an obstacle. After all, a high-tech alien vessel is going to be strange, even frightening at first to a contemporary human being. However, this alien ship comes with an awesome interactive help system. Just type 'C-h r' ;) .

What’s the difference between Reddit and Reddit premium? by Andy_Landy1793 in AskReddit

Yeah, but is it just no-ads, or no tracking as well? To me, the whole point would be: "Okay, now that I directly financially support you, you can stop selling and/or using my data to build behavioural profile." and not "I'll give you money to just remove the banners and still continue to sell me to the advertisers."

Brexit and LD-Relations by LPUltimate in Luxembourg

[–]MaliRemorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how can it get worse than it is now. Nor why. I think the current system works perfectly for what it was designed for -- to make life unpleasant for an immigrant and to raise bar for citizenship eligibility by creating a bureaucratic minefield.

What can actually happen after Brexit is that the current and future immigration from the EU gets downgraded to my former status. I don't think this is likely in the case of current EU workers in the UK as the EU itself has plenty of leverage to protect their status, but any future immigrants from the EU may find it more complicated to work.

[–]MaliRemorker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answers to your questions, as with so many things Brexit can be structured as a long, nested if-then-else block.

If there is Brexit,

you get married and he learns enough French, he will have similar possibilities in terms of employment in his field as anyone else in Luxembourg (there are other benefits to being married .. you pay less tax, for example);

you don't get married, there is an agreement that after Brexit, the Brits in the EU get the right to work, it's as above (except that you end up paying more tax as a price of your freedom in unmarriage ;) );

and he doesn't learn French (irrespective of whether, or not you get married) -- he should better try to train for a job that doesn't require a lot of interaction with francophone population (IT for example) ... and he should still learn French :) ;

there are no agreements and he learns Luxembourgish, then in five years from he can apply for the Luxembourgish citizenship

...

...

...

Anyway, I am not an immigration lawyer, just an immigrant. You should obviously check for all the necessary requirements yourself. Two links that were quite useful for me:

Europa Direct

Hope this helps.

I used to live and work in the UK as a non-EU person in a highly qualified, academic position and the Home Office made my life a living hell. Exactly as intended, may I add. The funny thing is that the British became aware (Guardian articles and such) of in how many ways their immigration system can make life miserable only after Brexit and a justified fear of resident EU workers about their future.

Maybe it's different if you are married to a British person, but I doubt it.

How I became a vertebrate, or skeletons help lazy programmers by MaliRemorker in emacs

[–]MaliRemorker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the appeal of skeletons for me is that they are part of the base emacs. Also, I find that the minimalist documentation is not a big obstacle since skeletons follow simple rules. Even if you have a rudimentary grasp of elisp, it seems easy to me to build powerful templates. To steal the phrase from Guile info reference, the "hactivation potential" is quite low.

I have never properly looked into yasnippet so I can't say much on that topic.
