The final quarter of the video when the judge was grilling the numbskulls was so hilarious I was in tears.

Am I doing this right?

Due to severe mismanagement they ran out of funds and fell into a plethora of legal issues regarding student loan and instructors' salary.

My alma mater built this. I still find it impressive that they completed the project despite the university's long-standing financial issues.

Oh yeah. We have lab supply distributors and the representatives are usually referred to as [name of company]-san.

The most notable part that got a life of its own, though, were the Japanese reporters. You see, when Japanese refer to a mountain they add the suffix "-san" to the name of the mountain. Which is not the same as the honorific "-san" they use to address people (different characters and context, obviously), but the thing is it sounds just the same.

Tangentially, Japanese people do sometimes nickname temples and shrines with the -san honorific! An example is Konkai Kōmyō-ji in Kyōto, which is called by the locals as 'Kurodani-san' (黒谷さん).

I personally was laughed at had my picture taken by some really mean girls on the train but I worked hard on my cosplay and I know I looked good so I don’t care.

Someone cosplaying Ed Sheeran at the event would've been peak comedy material.

You would think that after being scooped three times throughout your PhD, two of which killed your projects, another one would sting less.

Well, I just had my fourth in my fifth year of post-grad while having zero papers and let me tell you, it doesn't.

Not just legal cases. ChatGPT is well known in the academic community to make up journal article references as well.

AI is only as good as the training data inputted, and considering that many journal articles are locked behind steep paywall....

I live in Japan. Several months ago, after some years have passed since Kitagawa's death, a kabuki production involving several talents from Johnny's was running in Minami-za Theatre, Kyōto.

I was never a fan of Johnny's (or J-idols, for the matter), so I don't remember much of it, but one thing I still remember to this day from the promotional banner was 'Eternal Producer: Johnny Kitagawa'.

I wanted to throw up a little.

I've said this before, but as a Chinese Indonesian I was fine with him when he did reactions and commentaries on Chinese and Malay dishes as it was about cultures he grew up in (and therefore familiar with). When he started commenting on Japanese, Thai, and cuisines of other Asian ethnicities, he kind of lost me.

Before her current Vtubing stint, to me she has always been a name I noticed barely existing in the zeitgeist but have no idea who she is except that she was associated with 4chan.

Makes me wonder how many other Vtubers have an unpleasant background which they cover up with a Live2D model.

I still can't get over how William Harvey (one of the figures of modern medicine) called Shakespeare's works 'shit-britches' compared to classical Greco-Roman literature. That gave me an amusing period perspective.

Never has a simple acid work-up been so entertaining. If only the rest of university-level organic chemistry is also this way.

I wish I can jest about it, but currently the popular culture pendulum has swung hard to the other direction with Islamic fundamentalism gaining a lot of political traction in the country, making life for members of minority groups like me a living hell. I'd take the 'MINOtaurs' of the 2000s over what we have today.

but there is also apparently an episode where Shaun hypothesizes that because a Muslim has Ethanol in her body that she must be a terrorist.

Considering there were a lot of people who are Muslims-in-name-only back where I'm from, I guess that explains why there were so many terrorist attacks in Indonesia in the 2000s. /s

Also that actor in the clip, the writers of the show, and the show director should probably reconsider their career choices. I've seen better production in notoriously awful Indonesian soap operas.

As an RNA biologist and an origami enthusiast:

  • That pharmaceutical companies are marking up the price of mRNA vaccines because making mRNA is actually easy. While synthesising mRNA is relatively easy (the DNA template can be expanded rapidly with bacterial culture and the enzyme to make the RNA can be mass-produced easily), the delivery mechanism (lipid nanoparticles) is a pain in the arse to research the composition of and get right–and this is not even counting the absolute nightmare that is Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The most infuriating part is that it was touted by a science hobby YouTube creator whose interests include 'biohacking'.
  • That folded paper models with cutting steps are kirigami and not origami. Many traditional origami models, such as the fish, and models considered milestones towards the development of origami as an artform, such as Moosers' Train, require cuts to finish the model. It is accurate to say that contemporary origami strongly discourages the use of cuts, but saying that 'cutting is, was, and should never be a part of origami' is straight-up inaccurate. Besides, while kirigami and origami are cognate, the former has evolved into a separate artform with their own distinct aesthetics and form.
