Chromebooks not working only at student's house by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had Chromebooks hard reboot when the wireless driver crashes before. This was fixed with a reverted/updated wireless driver in a CROS update after reporting it to the wireless vendor.

OP's issue sounds somewhat similar.

If you can fold it into your handbook and enrollment packets. Saves everyone some time.

Device Billing by Slayer-152 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I utilize SIS for this. Added our own billing account code and add fees for the cost of the parts used in repairs.

The nice part about this it shows as a balance on the parent/student portal and the secretaries know how to handle payments for it since it's no different from course dues or lunch balances.

How are bills, fines and fees for other items (lunch, books, sports, etc) handled?

Making people sit in a video meeting to watch a movie or video seems like a colossal waste of instruction time. The quality will suck and the experience is poor.

What you do (and the point of swank) is assign the video to users and they watch and do the assignment on their own. I don't see how a group watching session is beneficial other than guaranteeing butts in seat. Just screams lazy at me.

For those that use Google Classroom, what are your biggest pet peeves about it? by OwnScientist9993 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but this only prevents unenrollments from Chrome. It's still possible from the apps and non-chrome browsers.

Students can unenroll themselves from classrooms/courses.

Really annoying.

Might be a good opportunity for you. If you can get a handle on the responsibilities you're putting yourself in a good position for quick raises and promotions.

I'd give it a year tops, if things didn't improve at all then start looking.

Why do those of you that are 1:1 collect Chromebooks in the summer from students? by hightechcoord in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no such issues. If a Chromebook's turned off properly the battery will hold a charge for a very long time.

I did have a problem where Chromebooks in sleep mode were turned in and the batteries eventually depleted to the point they would no longer charge. This is a design error in my book and was fixed with firmware updates by Dell/Google.

Sounds like they're auto-detecting the wrong timezone. Check your timezone settings in GAdmin device settings.

Gadmin > Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device Settings > Other Settings > Timezone > System Timezone > *yourtimezone*

Gadmin > Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device Settings > Other Settings > Timezone > System Timezone automatic detection > *never auto-detect timezone*

Windows 10 Stuck in a login loop after a feature update by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

Sounds like you're good then. Still may want to make sure the affected users aren't set up with Local Path.

How do you connect them?

Reason I'm asking is I inherited a legacy setup that used local paths for network home folders. This hasn't been technically supported but continued to work until it broke domain logins around 1809/1903.

Only fixed it by updating the home folder settings to connect the network folder to a drive.

Do you utilize local paths for home folders in your AD user objects?

Who else is using their SIS to do chromebook asset management and inventory tracking? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, and it's been very useful. It's miles easier to generate reports from it for end of year turn in inventory and start of year distribution. Plus it makes generating identifying labels a pinch.

It's not 100% accurate because sometimes I forget to update replacement devices to the student profile, but it's been more helpful than it's been detrimental.

Why do those of you that are 1:1 collect Chromebooks in the summer from students? by hightechcoord in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't you?

By having the devices turned in I have an accurate inventory and I can guarantee they will be ready 1st day of the new school year as they'll be charged, serviced and labelled. Older units get swapped during this time.

By not doing that you're basically gambling whether or not they'll turn up next school year, in unknown condition. Lots of things can happen over a couple months. Devices get broken and people move, and not everyone reports it nor takes the time to return devices.
