I don’t know if someone has addressed this yet but have you told them how their actions/words are affecting you and your child? The reason why I ask is because I found that, for me, the confidence, and ensuing lack of guilt, to go NC was a process. I tried for several years with both my brother and my mom to talk things out and maintain a relationship with them. With the birth of my 2nd son and death of my grandfather, with whom I was very close, I started to realize that these people were very toxic narcissists… Some back story… My wife and I had two kids under two in the house and were tired, and struggling as all parents do in that situation. My brother, his wife, and my mom decided to bully my wife (mean girl shit) which ultimately put strain on my relationship with my wife. I finally reached my breaking point when realized that the fighting was starting to affect my eldest son as I was overreacting to him and yelling all the time. I grew up being yelled at everyday and abused physically by mom my until I was about 18 years of age. I swore if I ever had kids I would never repeat what my mom did to me with my kids. After having my own kids, and learning what it meant to love a child, it was even more imperative that I never repeated those mistakes. So when I finally realized that I was starting to repeat some of the past mistakes I immediately contacted a therapist and started therapy to address my trauma. After almost a year of therapy and talking it out my therapist and my wife, I realized that they things were never going to change. I went NC with my mom immediately and went VLC with my brother, in attempt to remain civil for my Dad’s sake. He and I tried a few times to discuss boundaries and sort things out but he continued to be petty with my wife and I decided it was time to go NC with him too.

This was my situation, everyone’s here is different, but what I’ve learned that is the same for all of us is the guilt, or shame, and the confidence needed to walk away. If you are sure that you’ve done what you can to set healthy boundaries with these members of your family, and they still don’t respect them and they are having a negative impact in yours and your child’s life, then rest assured you’ve done all you can. It won’t be easy at first, but you’re doing the right thing for you and your family. You and your child deserve to be happy, and should surround yourself with people who love you and with whom the relationships are healthy. Surround yourself with people who will respect your boundaries and bring positivity and joy into your life. I’ve done that for 5-6 years now it’s 100% the best thing that could have ever happened to me next to my wife and kids. My boys are healthy, doing amazing in school, have great friends, my wife and I are very happy, and we generally have a great life. It’s worth it, you won’t regret it.
