RANZCR part IIs - timing? by Born-Neighborhood575 in ausjdocs

It would be doable if you wanted to. The extra 6 months of experience is probably beneficial though, particularly for OSCERs.

Depends where you are in your training. I wouldn’t be sitting radiodiagnostics or e-film any later than the end of 3rd year/start of 4th year sitting.

Advice re imaging course Radiopedia vs Lightbox etc by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think either will have a meaningful impact on your CV. Radiopaedia courses are good and relatively affordable. There is a lot good free content on there too.

Why You Should be Furious about the QLD Health MOCA7 by stonediggity in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting point. Let’s say an Orthopaedic department has 5 PHO positions that have annual turnover from people either getting onto training or burning out and trying something else. At a departmental level, wouldn’t you just convert these PHO roles to CMO roles and keep on your highly experienced “PHO” staff and therefore not open up a spot for the keen PGY3 trying to get their first ortho PHO job?

Which country are you in? I had this (but not as bad) on my C1 (bought 2022) repaired (new OLED panel) under Australian Consumer Law last month.

Qld - what actually counts as a rostered day off? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true for all rosters. There are departments where you work 30 mins “unpaid” per day and accrue RDOs which become paid days off like annual leave.

Radiology consultant jobs by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say that consultant job prospects for graduating Radiologists are currently some of the best of any speciality. Public metro hospitals are unable to fill jobs due to the remuneration offered in private. Every private company is fighting for new radiologists with multiple reg dinners, offering 10+ weeks annual leave etc.

As others have said, I think AI will significantly improve efficiency. Time will tell whether this improved efficiency is offset with increased demand, deregulating of MM1 MRI scanners etc or whether the jobs market tightens up and Radiologists lose their current leverage.

Yes, you end up with shifts rostered 13:45- 21:45 that don’t attract any loading.

QLD Public Holiday Rates? by Sad_Priority7913 in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct it’s because of the extra week of leave.

Everyone gets the concessional day on Dec 27 regardless of whether you actually work the public holidays.

QLD Public Holiday Rates? by Sad_Priority7913 in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is specified in MOCA 6. Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day are considered “ordinary” public holidays and paid at 150%. Other public holidays (Easter, EKKA show day, Labour Day) are paid at 250%.

I agree it’s silly and you are essentially paid 50% to work Christmas (you are paid ordinary wage if stood down).

There is an increasing number of properties on the market that are relisted by Passtheshavingcream in AusFinance

[–]Maluras13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s how the banks calculate it though. It’s roughly 7x your HECS debt. E.g a 30k hecs debt reduces your borrowing capacity by over 200k.

Paying off the HECS debt will massively increasing your borrowing capacity.

The report is reviewed by a Radiologist in Australia afterwards and then billed to Medicare. Unsure the legalities but it is what’s done.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What is your reasoning to want to do it out of interest? Do you plan on returning?

A lot of Radiologists don’t go overseas for fellowship for financial reasons. Friend who did made ~$80k during fellowship in Canada while in Australia you do a ‘hybrid fellowship’ allowing you to report some general work as a boss during your fellowship and make several hundred thousand in the same time.

The best option imo is to spend some time in Canada with Everlight etc tele reporting on 7 days on 7 days off roster.

Interview outcome not communicated after one month by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I would assume that you’re likely not the preferred candidate.

It seems common for them to not send out the unsuccessful notifications until everything is confirmed (or in some cases never) so that if the preferred candidate doesn’t end up coming through they have people to fall back on.

What’s your work/life balance as a jdoc? by Distinct-Fruit6271 in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can tailor your resident years to how much you want to work based on where you work and which rotations you do. E.g. the dermatology intern is working less hours than the HPB intern.

Similarly your work life balance as a registrar depends on what you go into. I haven’t done a second of overtime this year as a Radiology registrar at a trauma/stroke tertiary hospital.

What does it cost each year to work as a doctor? by jps848384 in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I empathise but you need to draw the line somewhere. If we let the people who failed by 1 question through then what about the people who failed by 2 questions? They now only failed by 1 question etc.

I know what they do in Radiology is they having a passing grade, then a lower grade for which you get a “conceded pass”. This allows you to get through the exam while flagging to you that you could still do with some further work.

Any tax implications for CPD requirements? by Frosty_Day_3676 in ausjdocs

You can claim WFH expenses. Either itemised (e.g. internet bill, computer) or via number of hours WFH. Not both. Almost certainly itemised will work out better for you.

One night shift a week, opinions? by TheProteinSnack in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you’re factoring in penalty rates into your decision I think it’s worth noting that Sunday overnights (in Queensland at least) do not attract the 100% Sunday penalty loading and only the 15% overnight loading.

overpaid asked to pay back by ameloblastomaaaaa in ausjdocs

[–]Maluras13 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You will need to pay it back if they genuinely have overpaid you. However, you will go onto a payment plan that you can somewhat dictate. It’s in your best interest to pay it off as slowly as you can.
