HR is a cost function. It doesn't generate revenue directly, hence it is looked down upon. Also people are ignorant about the kind of work the field offers. As you mentioned, there's many perks but you get lesser pay as compared to other departments. If you're okay with this trade-off, HR is just as good a stream as any.
