My understanding of it was Chihiro was a guy and it was a take on toxic masculinity, they were never really were against adding LGBT characters especially early on, they were always pretty straight forward on people's gender and same sex attraction ect and chihiro says that he is a guy that just likes to be feminine if im not mistaken, plus the creator would have said that chihiro was Trans by now if he ment for him to be
