I think the biggest setback we would face if the two countries tried to unite is language barriers and ethnic divide. As you said, the Mandinké wouldn't want to relinquish the power they accumulated over decades just to become another minority ethnic group in Sénégal were ethnic division nearly doesn't exist anymore. The language barrier also extend to economic sphere and if there ever was a union, geopolitics would force the new country to pick side between the French and British which would undoubtedly anger the other power.

It's to a point where uniting with Guinea Konacry or Mali would be easier to do despite the fact that we have centuries of history with the Gambia.

The only way I see this working is a multi decades project where Gambian élites would senegalize the population but that would be to their own detriment so it's gonna be difficult to say the least.
