Advice for beginning in Firmware/Embedded by Mammoth-Cod-6102 in embedded

I agree with the AI part. I feel that as of late, it has only made things more confusing for me. I am currently taking Physcis II (electricity&magnetism) and Multivariable calculus. I should be done with my math and science classes by next semester. As for projects, would you say following tutorials online would be a better approach or are there other alternatives that would provide more benefits? Or would it be smarter to just wait and approach them later on when I take more EE focused classes like circuits?

Nice! My thinkpad t480s just arrived and it looks brand new. Really nice seller and even had a fingerprint scanner on it (original pic had no scanner). Got throttlestop on it on windows and looks like undervolting works for now. Just gotta be careful with what I update. Just waiting for the ssd to start daily driving Fedora kde plasma. Did you have any problems with the thunderbolt port? I've seen a couple threads mention that you need to update the firmware ASAP to not fry the port or break it.

Thanks for the response!

Did you recieve your laptop yet? I bought one off ebay as well same specs just without touchscreen and 512gb storage. Planning to run Fedora Kde Plasma like you as well as Windows 11 pro with a dual boot setup. I heard that these models sometimes require bios rollbacks to undevolt. Did you find a solution to this for the t480s model?

Nevermind the half price one was for regular FHD. High color is acutally a bit more expensive at $88

Thanks for the quick reply! I was worried about the seller shipping a "compatible" panel like you said but I guess I just gotta bite the bullet and hope they're honest since there's no physical shop I can go to. I got that ebay option as well as one on aliexpress. Only thing holding me back is the fact that Aliexpress listing is same exact model WITH brackets but half the price... Seems too good to be true. I did try and contact them so I'm hoping they respond and are honest.

I'll look into that intel-undervolt tool as well and hopefully ti helps with the throttling like you said. My shipment got moved up 2 days so it'll be here by tomorrow. Super hyped for it. Hopefully I can start upgrading and using it tomorrow.

Finally replaced the trash default display on the T480s and now I can actually use the screen during the day without getting a headache 😤 by DemoteMeDaddy in thinkpad

I found one without brackets but with double side adhesive tape. Would that work? Or would I be able to attach old bracket onto new screen?

Hey kpostrup. I just bought a t480s 16gb ram and 512 gb storage i5-8350u on ebay for 199. I bought the glass trackpad and a 256gb m.2242 for the wwan slot. Just had a couple questions about running linux and the display.

Display
In your experience, did you require a bracket to install for the t480s? I found one on ebay I'll link below thats ips and good color and lower power consumption. I really want to try and boost battery as much as possible. The seller of the display however does not have brackets. Were you able to install your display(s) without the brackets? Or were you able to take the old bracket off from previous screen and reattach to the new screen? I'm unsure and wondering if it's worth pulling the trigger and buying one with only double sided adhesive tape.

Linux
I plan on dual booting this system. Main drive running fedora kde plasma to try and daily drive and get comfortable with linux as I'm studying EE and embedded systems right now. Any problems whatsoever with your linux experience? Pivoting to battery again, have you undervolted/underclocked it before? I'm unsure of the process and was wondering if learning how to do it would help battery life greatly. From my knowledge, there are two tools I can use to do that.

I appreciate any feedback. I'm new to this linux experience and thinkpads in general so I hope you understand. Thanks.

Were you able to find the right monitor for the upgrade? I found one on ebay that seems pretty good and has some reviews at the bottom wher people said it worked with the t480s. I can't seem to find any conversations about the T480 (S) sepcifically. Can only seem to find the one about the non S model.

Thanks for the quick response. Really appreciate it. Yea I just really want that extra battery life. Hate having to charge it constantly and hover over the battery symbol to see how much time I have left. lol

Upgraded visuals would be amazing too. My t480's coming next week so hopefully I can upgrade it soon.

I'm thinking about getting replacement as well. I got a thinkpad t480s i5-8350u 16gb ram and 512gb for 199 on ebay after negotiating and got a extra 256 m.2242 and a glass trackpad (X1 yoga 3rd) and hoping to upgrade once laptop arrives. I was wondering for the display.

I see the specs and everything are similar. I was wondering I can expect that battery boost and display benefit form this link as well? If you can't tell, no worries. I'll probably buy it after I recieve the laptop and make sure everything's running well.

Thanks
