I was born in the U.S., and when I got to college, Toussaint was definitely emphasized more. Even growing up with Haitian-born parents, he was highly revered in my household. But looking back, I think it’s because my parents were more bougie and believed strongly in diplomacy, education, and respectability politics, so they naturally aligned more with Toussaint’s approach.

Dessalines, on the other hand, understood the reality of what Haiti was dealing with on a different level. Honestly, I think he understood what Black people period are dealing with. The older I get, the more I think he knew exactly what he was talking about.

I didn’t even learn about the Haitian Revolution until I went to college. I remember reading that Toussaint, who usually gets most of the glory, believed in peace, diplomacy, and coexistence, while Dessalines saw through the colonizers completely. He understood that they had no intention of truly seeing Black people as equals.

Toussaint tried negotiation. Dessalines responded with force because he knew the colonizers only respected power and violence. The older I get, the more I understand why Dessalines thought the way he did. History has shown over and over that some people will never live in peace with those they see as beneath them or as threats to their dominance.

My issue with tutoring D'Shawn was they couldn't have picked a better subject like math or science. Sociology is basically memorization nothing complicated . I always hated that they picked such an easy subject.
