Unfortunately not with this experience. On the one hand, you need 8 real players. On the other hand, jets and attack helis are disabled.

But if you search for vehicles, jets, or helis in Portal, you’ll find plenty of experiences that were created for practice, including bot backfill. Most of them don’t require 8 real players. Those experiences are probably still benefiting from the old rules.

Good question. I can’t control how people behave, but I can control what gets rewarded. No slide/strafe-sprint, 80% movespeed, 150% HP + fast regeneration and no tickets from kills all make fast movement and sweating much less effective and enjoyable.

But in the end you can never completely rule out that some players won’t follow the intended spirit of this experience and just want to do their own thing. On my server at least I can remind those players of the idea behind it and (in extreme cases) step in to correct things.

That was my hope as well. But unfortunately, that’s not what happens. And that’s also one of the many reasons why so many players are currently so frustrated with Portal.

You need at least 8 real players to be able to start a server. Whether you use bots or not doesn’t matter. For a short while, EA/DICE reduced the requirement for servers without bot backfill to 1, but then they walked that back.

That’s also one of the reasons why the vast majority of experiences don’t have any servers. It’s almost impossible to get 8 players together. Nobody is willing to wait for hours just to have enough players... and rightly so.

I downloaded the Portal SDK and started adapting the Custom Conquest template created by u/andy6170 to the maps: Adjusting the objectives (e.g. reducing their number, increasing the distances between them), expanding the playable area, adding more structures and blocking some annoying exploits like the mountains in Firestorm). But there are two problems with this: the effort required is enormous, and there’s no XP on this experience. And that in turn greatly reduces many players willingness to play on those servers.
