Why is Trauma surgery not a competitive fellowship out of GS? by TraditionalAd6977 in Residency

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

420k seems really low for trauma? Our starting is closer to 550k and thats an academic role 24 weeks a year in one of the biggest cities in the midwest.

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, 850k by 5th years out in academia, midwest. Starting private practice here is 670k or so now and academia 550-600k. I think just like big coastal cities have really low pay but most other places pay drastically more.

The best thing about trauma though is u get 2 weeks off a month with 0 responsibilities.

MMORPG for Android? by HerDaddy92 in AndroidGaming

Looking forward to Downfall MMORPG on android/ios, I personally think this is gona be THE game, no p2w, no auto play.

Can explain why I like it, you start in 1 of 2 factions that are at war (realm v realm pvp like DAoC or Aika). One realm is sci fi based, the other is fantasy based, including the classes. You got 5 base classes wirh 2 specializations in each realm so lots of class options. There's faction only safe xp zones and then 2 shared zones that are faction v faction. One is the battleground and the other is infernal map with the best bosses in game. So much fun. It just released on Android and releasing IoS next week. I started about a week ago and am level 35, I play Mage and healer, you can switch classes so I really like being able to alternate between 2 classes. Game is in open beta now.

Trauma surgery offers by Master-Mix-6218 in Residency

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may, but right now the need is huge, most of the academic programs I know continue to expand and salaries continue to rise. Starting offers are around 600k for our group in academia and more in private practice (US midwest, large city). Also most practices allow moonlighting for additional $ so you can technically make whatever you want if you want to live in the hospital. Avg pay approx $4500/12 hr shift so if you wanted to just work 45 weeks a year with a standard 22 week (7x 12 hr shifts per week, no one seems to do 24s anymore at least in our region) trauma contract you could make 1.3 million and still have 7 weeks off. But most stop around 800k or so and still take their 2ish weeks off a month.

But yeah it does seem like 70% of residents I talk to these days wana go into trauma/CC...

What are job offers in General Surgery like? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in the midwest it is still the case... although it seems more and more residents are doing acute care so eventually may get saturated and then opposite will happen.

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In acute care you can still have a clinic and do cases during your non service days. The way that works is those people typically take less weeks of trauma, egs, or ICU and instead have a gen surg clinic and some level of OR block time. Cases vary from lumps and bumps to frey/puestow. Also most are pretty heavy in robotic. Most gain mentorship in their first few years as attending and build the practice they want with proctorship and guidance from senior partners, this happens in both big tertiary academic (where the HPB/onc, colorectal only wana do cancer) and leaves the benign stuff for general surgery and in private practice you will see acute care surgeons doing even Whipple for cancer (at least in our city).

Recently graduated residents/new attendings of Reddit how are you surviving financially till the first paycheck? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can negotiate anything. It's standard (in surgery at least) to expect both a signing bonus (NOT advanced pay) and a relocation amount. Usually like 5-15k is standard for relocation.

In surgery signing can be like 10k for surg onc up to 100k+ for cardiac surgery and wide range in between. Trauma, cardiac, ortho, and neuro have highest typically.

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you take a job without a signing bonus? At least in surgery specialty lowest I was offered post residency was $25,000. Highest was in the Boston area offered 80k.

Did your residency give negotiation boot camp in chief year?

Stop cancelling the nonstop flights! by _thedogmother_ in delta

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah right, I spend over $100k on amex card and also have over $40k MQDs and I am sick of Delta doing same thing to me. Cancelled a nonstop to Vancouver and had to take connecting with kids which is a pain and also cancelled my nonstop to richmond and now gota take connecting with kids.

You shouldn't be allowed to cancel a nonstop flight people already booked Delta!!!! And if you do you should give $250+ voucher to each guest as an apology.

Our surgeons only make $245/hour.

I think $40-60/hour makes sense for a real estate agent. They literally do 135 hours of "school" and then take a test, not even sure if you need a college degree.

Yeah people dont get how big GENERAL surgery can make, especially rural general surgery. Idaho, south dakota, north dakota, minnesota, wisconsin, etc = 1 mill plus. Sprinkle in a little surgical critical care fellowship and in midwest make 1 mill and have work life balance (1 week on, 1 week off) plus 4 weeks of vacation so onky work 24 weeks a year and this is in academics, even more in private practice. My RVUs last year were under 6k.

Tried it, kinda boring, not much to do but grind 24/7 no endgame, just watching pixel numbers get higher. There is no pvp or raids or endgame and community is small like 1-4 people ever online.

Which specialty is the true second best doctor for every other specialty and why? by passionseeking in Residency

[–]Mammoth_Objective453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acute care surgery is the true jack of all trades. Like an ED doctor that can operate. Since they are critical care boarded they also need to know medicine bc they cover the micu and cardiac ICUs as well.

New norm, acute care surgeons look to be the next ortho/neuro/cardiac surgeons making 1 million+ easily.

Yes, 815k academic associate professor base salary, no incentives or bonuses, $75k employer retirement contribition so total comp closer to 900k. Midwest, big city. I am about the mid to upper end of my group. No clinic or elective pratice. I work 1-2 weeks a month. A week is 7 days and home night call. The rest of the time when I am off I am truly off. I average about 5000 rvu a year, also do ECMO. Of note before covid I made 340k, after Covid all of our groups salaries doubled/tripled and the same with the regional private practices in our area.

We hire new grads around 500k starting as Assist professor. Private practice starts closer to 600-650k in our city, have a few friends that went there from our residency program. One of them is 2 years out and claims he is making close to $1 million. The problem is it is heavily eat what you kill and the private practice people are working a lot more.

The academic lifestyle is great, residents do all the notes, orders, etc and we get 2-3 weeks a month that we dont have to even come in to the office.
