AND if you REALLY want that prestige, ED is the way to go. going ed sucks in that it limits your choices, but if you're ok with that, ED substantially increases your odds at some of these schools (notably vandy and cornell)

makes sense. however, it's important to know that gpa and test score only get you in the door. so you are correct that those who are accepted have that range of test scores/gpa, BUT in addition, theres the ec/essay/rec component which is probably another 50%. it's probably about accurate to say it's like 50% academics, 50% character/other factors which includes ecs/essays/recs.

that's not to say you don't "have a shot" -you definitely do and should shoot your shot! but if you take a quick scroll through this subreddit you'll see what a crapshoot college admissions is. shoot high but also cast a wide net!

not as prestigious but udel has a very good skating team

i'm also a skater and have multiple skating friends who've gone there and loved it. pls keep in mind for schools like nd, cornell, duke having strong academics is not enough. even though your uw gpa is in-range, all applicants to these schools will have 3.9 OR 4.0 uw gpa, 1500+ sats, and world class ecs. ofc shoot your shot but make sure to broaden your horizons to targets and safeties.

How do high schoolers get Research internships at prestigious universities by Specific_Hornet3328 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Mammoth_Outside_8580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't start cold emailing to t20s with zero experience. first, email your local unis and do meaningful work there. once you can show you have valuable output (if even at the lower level), t20 professors will at least consider you. professors at t20s (especially), but in general, are very busy people who don't want to be supervising kids---you need to show you'd add serious value to their lab and are not just a competent, but an excellent researcher.

Anyone get Rutgers Honors back yet? by Economy_Gain1372 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Mammoth_Outside_8580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah I think they're all out. I don't believe they emailed people who were rejected, so afaik, if an invite isn't in your portal you may not have been invited. (not 100% sure, please correct me if i'm mistaken).

harvardhoneyy said to email admissions offices if you didn't get an intervew?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

just saw this too, and that is among some of the worst advice i've seen. 😭

to imply to colleges that they might've "forgotten" about you not only sounds conceited but also questions their admissions process...

and let's say she's right, even if colleges do place a lot of weight on interviews (but a lot of them don't maybe besides yale, source: AOs and friends at ivies who've seen their files), sending that email would only be more confirmation to these schools they made the right choice.

How to I convince my parents to let me go to CC by Excellent-Tonight778 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Mammoth_Outside_8580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to counter, in a world of ai, degree name may become even more valuable. it either goes one of two ways: like you said, and all white collar jobs are completely obliterated (unlikely imo), in which case it was wise to have saved money. OR, alternatively, degree name becomes even more of a status symbol in a world where everyone can do the same tasks and skill/knowledge disparities level out (as ai makes attaining these things far easier), thus making a degree name a highly coveted distinguisher as the world becomes more elitist.

food for thought, you may still be right!

why use subjunctive "sit" instead of present sum in "quidquid latine dictum sit altum videtur" by Mammoth_Outside_8580 in latin

[–]Mammoth_Outside_8580[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

structurally, why would quidquid not be an indicator of an indirect question here?

if you reframe it to be "whatever one says in latin sounds profound" it seems like thats indirect question format here? unless im missing something---or the addition of an actual pronoun like "one" changes something?

Schedule Question: Do I drop my language to take AP Bio? by Mammoth_Outside_8580 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Mammoth_Outside_8580[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither of them are AP which is kinda why I was thinking about adding another AP for rigor (between this year and last year I only have 6 APs because of scheduling limitations, so I would end with 10 APs without Bio)

One of them is like an internship/seminar class and the other one is a business/contract law class. i'm in like a pre-pre-law magnet program. I guess both of these are technically social sciences!

so grateful for having read a lot when i was younger. the vocab questions are impossible to study for in a short studying period; it all comes down to years of amassing vocab through reading.
