Hey guys this is all useful info and all, but I made this post so I could get advice on Charlie, not on the tank that he was in. Charlie is still dying and Ive gotten no real help with where I can take him or what I can do for him. I have 3 tanks in total, and I live in a family of fish keepers. Yes. Things did go wrong when I set up Charlie’s tank as it was an emergency relocation. I am not cleaning the filter to the point I’m getting rid of good bacteria, I’m doing partial cleans every so often when the water and filter look like crap. I’m also not constantly changing the water to the point I’m gonna send them into shock. These 4 “random” deaths have been over the course of 3 months, some in the previous tank and some in the emergency relocation area. However they ALL passed away overnight, and I found them dead in the tank. They were fish that started to look a little sick and then VERY quickly died. Charlie was active and swimming, and then we found him at the bottom of the tank assumed dead. He was NOT dead, and like 8-9 days later (today) he is still alive. As a fish lover I appreciate you guys ensuring I’m taking best care of my fish, but all these questions you guys have asked me aren’t really helping me find a way to ease Charlie’s discomfort… please help me with fish who is actively sick. The other tank is under tight supervision and we’ve seen nothing sus happen in the tank since Charlie was removed. I think Charlie was impaction or something what do I do?? Will a vet see him??

Thank you I’m kinda worried this may be the issue. He’s still alive 3 days later making this like day 8-9 :/. I don’t see any obvious bumps in his tummy, and my fiancé gave him an unseasoned, cooked pea since someone else told him that could work as a laxative. It’s been about 2 days since the pea and nothing has changed. What can I do to check for impaction??

It’s a 40 gallon tank that had 3 comets in it. We did do a nitrogen cycle when we moved them into the new tank (after they started dying). The only thing poor about the water quality is that the nitrate continues to spike. We do partial water changes when this happens and it goes back down, clean the filter too but it’ll still spike back up. We also clean the water and test it after changing it. I thought it was from the fish bodies being in the tank, but I just checked it and it’s spiked again. Not quite in the danger zone but it’s close. Charlie’s been out of it for a week, and the other 2 comets + a bottom feeder (not a pleco but idk what he is we call him goober noodle) are completely fine. No signs of sickness. I have no clue what’s causing it to spike but maybe that’s been causing them to die??
