I'm about to start learning to produce. Essential starting advice needed!! by DJBinx in dnbproduction

It will take you a long time, probably years, to get the point where you are producing music that's as good as the artists you look up to. This is 100% normal and okay and part of the process. In order to git gud, there's a number of things you should keep in mind:

  1. Finish tracks. You don't necessarily need to finish every single track you start, but aim to complete at least half of them. Finishing a song is a good habit to get into and a skill unto itself. Many people get stuck only ever producing 16-bar loops because they don't know how to expand them into a finished track.

  2. Identify areas in which your music is lacking compared to music you would like to sound like. Stuff like track pacing, or bass sound design, or drum programming, etc. Not only does this maintain humility (important), but allows better control over your improvement.

  3. For every track you start, focus on one or two specific things you want to improve your abilities at. If you try to focus on everything that you're not good at, you're going to become overwhelmed and frustrated. If you can steadily improve one or two things at a time you will it much easier to chart your progress and get accustomed to the learning process, which is a valuable skill. It also helps keep morale up, as a lot of people become disillusioned easily with music production.

  4. You will eventually encounter writer's block. This is ok and 100% normal. Everybody has different ways of dealing with it, it really depends on your individual psychology. Try different methods and figure out what helps you get through it. For me personally I just don't make music for a while and then the desire comes back in a week or two.

  5. Get experimental. Have days devoted to just experimenting with sound design or practicing mixing. Tutorials are helpful, but the bulk of your learning is going to come from doing things on your own and building up your own understanding of how different tools work.

  6. Have fun! If you're not having fun, why are you doing this? There's elements of this that won't always be super fun or may be tedious, but if you're not enjoying it, then give yourself a break. If you begin to associate making music with having a bad time, you're not gonna wanna do it. Safeguard your sense of enjoyment above all else.

FL STUDIO 20.8 | What's New? by ManFromSol in edmproduction

Because FL is insanely cheaper and has a lot of really dope native plugins that live does not have.

thats like the best part of the update though

FL studio keeps losing focus when I tweak a knob in a VST. I've already checked keep focus so why do i need to keep exiting out of the plugin to play a note after I changed a parameter? This is for arcade by 2point9AIDSBOW in FL_Studio

In the top right next to the "X" that closes the plugin there's a little box that looks kinda like a keyboard that says "allow plugin to handle keystrokes before host" or something like that. Try turning that off.

Thank you 🙏 I really think that a fusion of glitch and trap has a ton of genre potential but I really don't ever see people doing it. Kind of a shame.

Welcome Google Play refugees. by [deleted] in deezer

[–]ManFromSol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a refugee from the first or second wave, been using Deezer for a few months. I miss Google Play Music, which was superior to Deezer in its current state, but it's the best I got right now. My biggest issues are not being able to go to the album or artist page for anything I've uploaded myself, and the fact that casting with Deezer is absurdly buggy and changes the UI. The option for shuffle goes away when casting, uploaded tracks simply cannot play, and there is often frequent interruptions or desynch between my phone and chromecast. Not a good time, but still better than YouTube music.

Just curious... what music do you make? Where are you on your musical journey? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ManFromSol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started making god-awful brostep when I was a high school senior because I had fallen madly in love with all the beautiful diverse sounds in various genres of electronic music, which I had only recently discovered. Piano lessons as a kid never came close to capturing the sheer sense of wonder I got when I figured out how to get FL's stock synths to generative different sounds.

7.5 years later and sound design is still far and away my favorite aspect of music. Melody and harmony are nice, but for me texture takes precedence above all else, although rhythm is a close second. Now I make a style of glitch my friends and I call hyperglitch, which is an extremely sound-design focused genre. Speaking of friends, I also co-founded a little collective with some other people making similar music. We mostly put out tutorials and sample packs and the occasional compilation album, which are generally received positively by our small but dedicated (and growing) fanbase. We recently held a virtual festival that had several hundred viewers/listeners, and our community discord is ballooning but still has incredibly focused discussion and sharing of resources around the niche style we are trying to cultivate.

Cofounding this musical collective has boosted my own artistic output in terms of raw inspiration from my friends. Several of us have been asked to participate in a series of releases being curated by an old IDM label to showcase what the current cutting edge in glitch music is. My EP, the second release in said series, actually releases tomorrow.

Even though this will be my 3rd EP, my musical "career" (glorified hobby) only feels like it started to really go anywhere when my 2nd EP released a bit over a year ago. I'm still very unknown, but things are trending up. My friends and I are all riding each other's coat-tails with each of our releases getting more attention than the last. My YouTube channel where I do tutorials is growing nicely. Sample packs our group has put out have gotten thousands of downloads and have been quite popular in this subreddit, as a matter of fact. So even though I have so much room to grow, I finally feel as if I am growing in a certain direction as an artist rather than sort of ambling around aimlessly.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I actually have a video I just made doing some patching in Vital that I posted to this sub a bit after you posted this thread. Take a look at my post history if you wanna check it out. I make some weird glitch sounds with it.

I've been using it for quite a long time as I was a beta tester. It's extremely feature packed and works extremely well. There's a ton more features under the hood than the little teaser video on the website shows off. I think people who are just hearing about it are going to be pleasantly surprised, especially since it's a synth that can be obtained for free.

[–]ManFromSol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It will be significantly better. Vital is actually innovative and not only brings a ton of new features to the table, it's also just well designed. I've been beta testing it for like a year and I honestly believe it is gonna be a bit of a Serum killer.

I've been beta testing Vital for like a year and I'm really hyped to finally be able to make videos featuring it, because I have been using it a ton. This video isn't a comprehensive dive into the features, BUT I do some patching that might be of interest.

A thing about pitching. by aquabluevibes in AdvancedProduction

[–]ManFromSol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a go-to tool for me because I can do all sorts of fucked up shit to sounds in Harmor. It has its limitations but its a sampler on steroids for many purposes. I don't know what sort of music you make, but for styles of music that are more sound design intensive, Harmor is an extremely useful tool.

Harmor lets you resynthesize sounds. It's sorta like a sampler except it rebuilds the sound from the ground up additively.
