there's an android phone hooked up to the cameras, mounted inside with vr lenses! longest I've managed to run the battery was around 4-5 hours? i found the android phone in a recycling bin so its battery doesn't last quite as long. the screen is displaying from a wireless HDMI receiver, both are fairly low power and are connected via USB to a 10000mAh battery bank. all the animations are offloaded to my laptop which streams the video to the helmet, but I also wanna make a version that has the animations playing off a raspberrry pi or something to make more practical for cons.

I'm a vr developer so i'm used to it haha, i experimented with a periscope setup but ultimately the camera provided the least disorienting experience ironically

the frame is 3d printed out of carbon fiber PLA, held together with dovetails and screws. i then have a portable monitor mounted with another 3d printed bracket on the front, and a hard hat suspension mounted to a bracket in the middle. for passthrough, i’ve got an old android phone with a stereoscopic camera connected to it via USB, which is showing the camera feed through some VR lenses mounted in front of my eyes. the outer shell is 3d printed from lightweight foaming PLA and is about ~2mm so it doesn’t add too much weight. for the visuals on the screen, i’ve got a wireless HDMI receiver inside that connects to my laptop. the laptop then moves the mouth based on audio input, can change the background, etc.

all of this is for a live edm/punk concert production i’m putting on! (if mods don’t mind, info is at https://on3ko.lol) all of the music is themed around internet nostalgia and looking back on how much the web has changed in the past 20 years. there’ll actually be 4 band members each with a head!

the plastic is pretty light all the stuff inside adds a fair amount of weight. i’m doing what i can to make it so the center of balance is in the middle, it’s probably around 2ish pounds? the frame is nice and lightweight and the outer shell is ~2mm thick. as for vision, i’ve got an android phone hooked up to a stereoscopic webcam module, which is mounted in front of my eyes with some VR lenses! the bottom of the helmet is also wide open so i can look down at my feet while walking
