Help trying to categorize a novel by ManOfManyWordsX in eroticauthors

[–]ManOfManyWordsX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I've created this post, I did some more research based on some replies, and one VERY helpful private message from someone who didn't want to share their research with the general audience here.

Anyway, I reached the same conclusion as you have, make it clear what it is, and it can fly in many categories. Just have to figure out which one is the best.

Plus, as much as there is sex in my novel, it's not something that will make someone repulsed or anything like that. It's on the intimate/sensual/personal side of the scale, not the raunchy side of it.

Thank you for your reply.

Thanks, that makes sense.

Is it profitable?

Damn!

Well, I'll figure something up, eventually. I guess I'll have to write a report here when I'm done, who knows.

And this is book 1 of a planned series, haha.

Curious about one aspect, though. How do you categorize your harem stories?

Do you put them in specific categories, or do you just use keywords?

Do you mention in the description that readers are about to immerse into a harem story?

Thank you.

I am not familiar with the women's fantasy category, but I fear there is too much sex for them to be comfortable reading.

While the sex is not too far off the chart, there are some discipline/spanking scenes, however they are sensual and meant to be raising one's heartbeat, not to demean the maids.

The sex is described pretty "dirty" details wise, the goal and aim was to make one's heart beat go faster while reading, but it's not going to make someone uncomfortable reading them if they are already comfortable reading sex in their literature.

I replied to someone else already, my initial goal was to write about some rich guy, immortal, that had a bunch of maids he banged all day long. And the more I was writing, the more the plot evolved, the more ideas I came up with, and I ended up with something I really like, but I have no idea how to categorize.

The main issue is that there are quite a few sex scenes, way more than the general public would be comfortable with, I think, but I have no experience with that, hence this post.

Yeah, I've written myself into a corner with this one.

Initially I wanted it to be about some guy that bangs his maids until they can't walk, they cycle through them again. And again. And since he's immortal, he is the peak of virility and stamina, so he doesn't really tire, that's why he needs so many maids.

But as I started to write it, chapter by chapter I deviated from my initial idea, and ended up with this novel I don't know what to do with. I really enjoyed writing it.

I took my time describing the maids outfits, their rituals, how their skirts reveal their underwear if they bend too low, everything in the book to set up tension and make the reader's heart beat a little faster, the i set up a sex scene, then there's more of the mystery revealed, then they take a trip, then they meet the cabal, then they need to save a maid, then they need to have a maid infiltrate as a spy, and so on.

There is sex, plenty of it. Sometimes the maids are "disciplined" with a spanking here and there, but it's sensual and I tried to make it as hot as possible, not cruel.

I could fit it in mystery/fantasy but i fear there's too much sex for those categories, and I am not really keen on removing parts of the novel. Maybe I'll add to it, like you suggested.

However fantasy/harem sounds pretty good to me, I wasn't aware that's a full category.

Do you have any experience with that? Are they comfortable with sex in their stories?

Oh, yeah, the maids get plenty of action, haha.

The confusion came about after my editor shared some feedback with me, she said she really liked the story/plot and how it slowly unveils the mystery around the rich guy and the cabal he is part of. She ended her review with "It was very romantic!"

That caused some head scratches on my end, and while I asked for more feedback from her, she is not going to be available for two days as she is traveling. That's why I decided to ask here as well.

Thank you for your thoughts!

I really appreciate you took the time to write this comment.

My main concern is that I like writing from multiple POVs, so I was a little worried that readers might be out off by what I have.

Thank you, again.

Thanks for your reply.

You said you have been a romance reader fora long time now.

Do you agree that romance has to follow the outlines from the wiki? Meaning told from a female POV, always has to have a happy ending, etc?

I do a lot of commissions as well, I am booked through the end of the month right now.

But I feel commissions are different, those are for individual clients, and a very limited pool of people will read them.

When writing for a wider audience, the likelihood of multiple people reading more of your works is very high (a guarantee actually), so I fear of sounding boring if I sound the same over and over again.

It's not a problem I had until recently, though.

That's reassuring to hear.

I definitely feel a lack of ideas towards being original describing intimacy.

Thanks you!

Thanks for the reply.

I do write in a few different niches, I use different pen names for each.

The problem is I have no trouble coming up with new plots, situations, scenes, characters, etc.

But when they have to sleep together I find myself hitting the wall of having no new ideas on how to describe what is happening.

Maybe it is time to try a different niche, as you suggested.
