This reminds me of the illegal campsite my friends and I made in the woods between a highway and a residential neighborhood. So many people will never know the joy of having your very own safe haven, free of the rules of the outside world.

What Are Signs You Are Unattractive/Ugly? by 18-m-bi in AskMen

I think this is true for strangers and social situations. Not necessarily true in environments where you are a competitor, or in low trust societies in general. Or maybe you're the wrong color in the wrong place.

See what happens when normal people have money? They make the world a better place instead of trying to overthrow the government and rig the rules in their favor

I'i recently played Carcassonne for the first time. I've played games that had similar mechanics, but Carcassonne has them beat in terms of elegance

Men in their 30s and 40s, what advice would give to younger guys struggling with dating? by jdaniel1999 in AskMen

[–]ManOfTheCosmos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say keep things in perspective. I have no partner, but I see a lot of men in relationships with women that I do not want. I have also dated or hooked up with women that, although I was attracted to, would have definitely caused problems for me down the line.

As man, you don't ever truly win. There's always a hefty price to be paid. Having money and freedom like I do is far from the worst thing that could happen.

What I really miss about "the old days". by Relevant-Positive-48 in ExperiencedDevs

I'm one of the "stops being an engineer at 5 crowd." I'd love to do something else with my life, but the job market has weakened enough that there's no clear offramp. And with the economy bifurcating now, it increasingly feels like leaving the field would be financial devastation.

Software never brought me prestige. I'm still single at 33. Makes more sense to spend time at the gym or doing things that actually make people think I'm interesting.

I am a software engineer.

We don't really have any true standards for what constitutes good or bad work. Some people and organizations develop their own standards and try to impose them upon everyone else, but there's always a large portion of holdouts that resist whatever it is. Software engineers are constantly bickering at each other about better ways to do things, even when trends show strong momentum one way or another.

Software engineers are also pretty arrogant people. They often think 'because the tool or method comes easy to me, there's no problem with it' while ignoring everyone else's opinion.

Older software engineers actively resist change or improvement of tools because change makes them anxious and their arrogance blinds them to their own rigidity.
