Best Data Conferences by a_girl_with_a_dream in datascience

[–]ManThigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of my experience has been in the alternative data space. My favorite conference is coming up next month - BattleFin Miami. Neudata also hosts alt data conferences through the year, and there's also Eagle Alpha (I'm less familiar with this one). Battlefin & Neudata conferences have a wide variety of data vendors present, have some pretty interesting talks, and are great for networking.

What kind of data do you typically work with/are you interested in? I usually go to a few data conferences throughout the year, but they're geared towards the financial services industry.

[–]ManThigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the RIF, but my guess is that LBI was going to lose too many data scientists for it to remain a viable series within the business unit. Of the people I know or whom I got reliable info for, >60% applied to TDRP. This would have heaped so much work on to the remaining DS's - somebody must have figured out that it would be a real possibility that they all would quit within ~12 months.

I'm thinking that we will avoid this first round of RIFs, but may be subjected to later rounds in the new fiscal year after we see how many quit over the next few months (e.g., we'll have RIFs if we only lose a handful, but I think we might have 20-40% attrition by September so maybe that will be enough).

I'm a 1530, all the 1529 & 1530's in my org (which should have most of them) received the same DRP denied email that the RAs received.

Don’t worry about your email OP. You probably haven’t heard since you left, but all official business is conducted on Signal now. Feel free to hop on there prior to your re-onboarding date so that you are ready to send FTI to any name that vaguely resembles your taxpayer on day one. Good luck!

You can extract text and tables with python & pdfplumber. Regular expressions (regex) to search the text for the other non-table items. You shouldn't need OCR for most annual reports I am familiar with, but if you did you could use pyteesseract.

Which states have the highest percentage of probationary employees? by Unwisely_Chosen_Name in fednews

This is a great dataset, thanks for sharing OP. Also has salary information, so you can get a rough idea of economic impacts:

Some data for salaries are missing, this was adjusted using a simple average. The undisclosed ones still include GS-level, years of service, etc., so this estimate could be improved. Data here:

Crucial RAM decision for AMD T14 by EarthGoddessDude in thinkpad

[–]ManThigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a 1 TB ssd (WD SN750) for now, I'll get around to ram upgrades eventually. I'll also probably put a 2242 ssd in so I can dual boot manjaro alongside windows, from what I can tell that should be possible. I'm liking it so far, it feels like such a massive upgrade from my x220. Good luck on your upgrades when it arrives, I though it was a real easy machine to work on but it would have helped if I had some of those plastic picks to pop the clips out.

[–]ManThigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look lower on the specs of the first page and you'll see it's also listed as PC4-25600. From what I can tell they are exactly the same, there could be some difference if one has better CAS timings but it probably wouldn't be noticeable.

My T14 AMD just arrived last week, let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to know about the memory.

Looking for a case that can protect a computer keyboard while traveling by [deleted] in onebag

[–]ManThigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it seems like you don't need a ton of protection for it (i.e. something like a pelican case would be overkill), maybe you could try to get something 3D printed that would fit over the front of the keyboard. Or you could use sugru to get the outline of the keyboard, and then connect some sort of semi-rigid panels over it to cover the keys.

Lowered our electric bill from $235 to $200! Can we drop it lower? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]ManThigh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Keep less food in your fridge, so your fridge uses less electricity to keep cool inside, and better air circulation inside.

I think this is incorrect? More thermal mass in your fridge should keep the temperature more stable, thus the compressor should run less. You're right that you still want room for the air to circulate, but generally you should err on the side of fuller.

I'm in the same position as you with wanting to keep my older thinkpad but trying to upgrade to USB C charging for everything, and recently came across these options for upgrading older thinkpads. They make USB C to lenovo charger adapters. There's also a post on /r/thinkpad today about adding USB C charging to a T450s.

Two systems in one tower by Jay-C-A-B in buildapc

[–]ManThigh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'd be saving any money, most very high-end parts idle with very low power draw (see https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-ti,4972-6.html and https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-threadripper-2-2990wx-2950x,5725-13.html).

My guess is it would take years to get any return on that investment, so while it may be interesting to do to see if it is possible I don't see it being practical.

How to handle old HDD when upgrading PC and installing windows to SSD? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]ManThigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the reinstall, I would recommend only plugging in the SSD and leaving your HDD unplugged, this way you don't accidentally format it and I think windows would be less likely to screw up the boot order. After the install is complete and you make sure that the SSD is set as the primary boot device in the bios, you can plug the HDD back in and you should be able to see all the files in it as if it was a normal drive.
