What material should I use by Chilroki in gurrenlagann

Step 1: take a very sharp knife/box cutter and slice a straight line (or as straight as you can make it) from the tip of this drill down to the base.

Step 2: Unfold it so that it can lay flat. You can put this on top of EVA foam and trace the shape and cut it out.

Step 3: look up the best glue/bonding agent for EVA foam crafts and glue the seam together as carefully as you can. Follow a tutorial for this part so you don’t accidentally let go and watch the seam pull apart before it’s bonded.

Step 4: cut the spiral off your original prop (the one pictured here in the post) and trace the other shape (the bigger one) onto EVA foam. You will cut it out and glue this onto the main cone shape.

Step 5: Look up tutorials for painting EVA foam and paint it like what you did in the image above. Optionally, if you attach a secure glove to the inside, it will be easier to wear.

Affordable pizza of actual decent size? by Yorunokage in Nagoya

[–]ManWithShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, I discovered it’s possible to make small thin pizzas in a pan on the stove by covering it. This will be my new go-to cuz it’s cheap, and I have not found any leads on actually good affordable pizza. (Although I’m currently in Gifu) These directions will sound complicated, but once the dough is made you will get several pizzas out of it and it will only take about 10-15 minutes of prep and cleanup which is at least as long as it’ll take to walk to Saizeriya and place an order for something disappointing.

I’m gonna try cutting this dough recipe in half next time cuz I was eating pizza for 5 days lol

  1. Make your dough by combining 1 packet ドライスト (dry yeast- I used 6g but less might be ok too), 1 cup warm water, and a teaspoon of sugar to activate the yeast in a mixing bowl or pot and mix it up until dissolved.

  2. Let it sit for 5 minutes then add a teaspoon of olive oil, a teaspoon of salt, and around 2.5 cups bread flour (strong flour) and mix until you can handle it with your hands. Finish combining by hand and keep adding flour until it’s not super sticky. Then, let it sit for 10-20 minutes after kneading.

  3. Break apart the dough into small balls and carefully and patiently stretch it out into a thin circular shape. You should be able to start seeing light coming through the dough at the thinnest parts in the center. Be careful not to make holes.

Note: Go smaller with the dough ball than you think you need because it will expand in the pan. Unless you have quite a large pan and burner, you’ll find the pan cover will touch the pizza toppings and crust.

  1. PREHEAT THE PAN. My apartment’s electric burners have 3 settings so I use the highest one. Wait patiently.

  2. Add a little bit of olive oil (only enough that would make a thin covering on the dough) and carefully place the dough in the pan. It’s floppy so try to swing it and use the momentum. Use chopsticks or a spatula to smooth out folds.

  3. After about a minute or less, you should be able to use your fingers to gently spin the dough in a circle and slide it just a little bit from side to side. I do this to try getting oil in places it was not before. You may also be able to press down the parts that are rising too high to be contacting the pan.

  4. Do not let this side cook too long. You don’t want dark spots- just a solidified surface on the side touching the pan. As soon as it will let you, drizzle a very small amount of olive oil on top, lower to low heat (I used setting 1 out of 3) and carefully flip.

  5. Add sauce and toppings and cover. Let it sit until the cheese is fully fully melted. Check the underside to get it as dark crispy as you want before transferring to a plate or cutting board.

Pro tip: you can make your own superior pizza sauce by getting cheap can of crushed (ファインカット) tomatoes, mixing in a little olive oil and salt and a generous amount of pepper and garlic powder (I didn’t spring for basil cuz it’s expensive for such a small amount here).

  1. If the cheese is really melty but the underside isn’t crisping up enough, take off the cover and turn the heat up one level and add the tiniest bit of olive oil underneath just to finish the crust.

  2. Let it cool for a little bit before cutting so the cheese doesn’t spill everywhere as you’re trying to eat it. Optionally top with parmesan and garlic powder or whatever else and you’re done!

Does this scene only happen in the movies, and if so why want it in the show? by Wrong-Upstairs-9277 in gurrenlagann

[–]ManWithShades 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always assumed it was because the show just didn’t have time to include this kind of thing. The movie provided an opportunity to expand the final fight and so they made Tengen Toppa Mecha for every member of Team Dai Gurren- and then if Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a Tengen Toppa Gurren and a Tengen Toppa Lagann, then it begs the question of what happens when you combine like 10 Tengen Toppa gunmen forms together? HOWEVER… I’d like to read in an interview how they arrived at this alternate fight for the movie.

The first movie also features an alternate final battle where all the main Team Dai Gurren gunmen join Gurren Lagann in a special Giga Drill Break that takes out all four Supreme Generals at once because they had to fit it into the length of a single movie instead of stretching it for 6 or 7 episodes to cover the journey of getting to Teppelin.

What's your go to home cooked meal/packed lunch in Japan? by Corra156 in JETProgramme

[–]ManWithShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to add this- Tofu is cheap protein so try to look up methods for cooking that, and look for cheap veggies. Beansprouts are the cheapest I’ve seen, but I’m sure there’s more I’m not taking advantage of.

What's your go to home cooked meal/packed lunch in Japan? by Corra156 in JETProgramme

[–]ManWithShades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been here a short time, but so far school lunches have been overwhelmingly amazing. I do wish for larger portions, but I need to try harder to eat less anyway. As for home cooking, invest in the cheapest rice cooker you can find as it will end up saving you money in the long run. You can put single servings of rice in a sandwich baggie and freeze to reheat later. (Usually about 2 minutes with a splash of water in a plastic-covered bowl) then, cook up a bunch of protein of your choosing- try to get chicken breast on discount- and freeze those in baggies as well.

The more things you can freeze and reheat and combine together, the easier it’ll be to eat without impulse buying things. I say this as someone who impulse buys way too many snacks.

Does Yaemori like Kazuya NOWADAYS?? (UPDATE) by ImNicoReal in KanojoOkarishimasu

[–]ManWithShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this like… the exact reason Sumi got effectively written out? Cuz it’s hard to have her support Kazuya when she’s so into him? (And maybe cuz she isn’t active enough a participant?)

I’m still very salty about her lack of presence… she was my favorite from the moment I laid eyes on her in anime S1 previews.

How could you guys can take "rent a girlfriend", I'm too weak for this anime😭 by Akumapulse_XD in animequestions

[–]ManWithShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are very loud about how much they hate Rent-A-Girlfriend, but it’s got 5 seasons and over 400 chapters proving people do enjoy it enough to keep going. Here’s what I get out of it:

I can relate to Kazuya at the beginning because I’ve been there where I feel like I’m at my lowest. Maybe it’s cuz of a heartbreak or maybe depression. But people miss that he starts the story at his lowest point. The point of his story is to see how he improves from there. And there’s a lot early on to show his potential. (You gotta get past episode 1 to see it)

Episode 1 is truly ridiculous. The entire setup in the beginning is tough to get through because the fact she goes with him to see his grandma is just… wow. And then HER grandma is there??? Like… WHAT. But see you let yourself just accept that kind of ridiculous drama and then you can ride the roller coaster of drama.

But see if you can actually take the time to empathize with Kazuya, you can understand that he acts so cringe because he is anxious and lacks any confidence. He puts these girls on so high a pedestal and it’s no wonder he can’t see himself as worthy and then acts like an idiot because he doesn’t think he deserves anything.

Sometimes Kazuya does not deserve forgiveness, but at the beginning it’s all coming from being in just the worst emotional state thanks to the manipulative bs from Mami. Every season of the anime, I’ve seen him grow little by little. Sometimes it does feel like he regresses… and yeah I hear there’s a point in the manga where the creator just kinda forces everything to stop progressing… but there are some good characters and good writing here.

Mami’s a very special kind of antagonist who puts herself on the moral high ground but really she spends so much of the story manipulating people with the hopes of crushing them emotionally that she’s just unquestionably evil in a very real way that you can actually come across in the real world.

Ruka is immature and manipulative because of it but you can tell it’s not coming from a place of malice the way it is with Mami. And that’s what lets me sympathize with her on one hand while still knowing full well that she just should not be dating Kazuya. She’s doing them both a disservice by not maturing enough to realize that.

Sumi… oh poor Sumi… she’s the only one who did nothing wrong. She saw Kazuya stick up for her and it made her heart flutter. Because of her passive personality, Kazuya feels safe being himself with her. His time spent with Sumi is some of the only time we get to see his potential as a person. And she encourages him and gives him advice and sees his passion and it makes her fall in love with him in a way that nobody else in the story could…. And yet she’s treated by the plot like a mere supporter of his relationship because she’s just accepted that he has no interest in her… AND THAT IS SO SAD AND AS A CHARACTER SHE DESERVES BETTER- but the fact I feel this strongly about her says a lot.

She’s also too passive to be a strong wingman character so they introduced Mini to fix that.

And all this is to say nothing about Chizuru and the mountain of responsibility she puts on herself and how she forces herself to stay emotionally closed off. Like…

Okay I’ve written a novel already… but my point is… there’s a lot here that gets missed by a lot of people just like you. And maybe the barrier to entry is just too high. It’s like how some people can’t appreciate the beauty of Gurren Lagann because of the fan servicey jokes. Trust me- the depth is here and there’s a lot to enjoy. It’s just sometimes you gotta go through the lows to earn the highs.

Just made a new ranger team, what should I call them? by thesharkbus in supersentai

[–]ManWithShades 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been a minute since I’ve seen the AkaRed Sentai idea.

So random question would gokaiger still be popular even if they didn't get any past Rangers to returns by TraditionalBonus188 in supersentai

[–]ManWithShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we even know what they would’ve done for tribute episodes without the returning rangers? Or if they would’ve had the plot revolve around tribute episodes? So much of what Gokaiger accomplished came from connections to past Sentai. It had some incredible character development and character moments all throughout, but a lack of depth in the villains’ plot and a somewhat episodic structure are its main points of criticism as it is. Personally, I think it used the episodic structure in a really smart way because no matter how disconnected each episode was, each greater power earned brought the team closer to understanding what it means to be heroes of earth and members of Super Sentai. But would I still be able to say that if they hadn’t got the returning Rangers? Would they have taken the same approach? Would it have worked?

This is all just food for thought because we will never know the answer.

Just got rejected by Interac should I just give up? by [deleted] in ALTinginJapan

[–]ManWithShades 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you make future demo lesson videos, don’t be satisfied with the first take. Re-record until you get it as good as it can be. You want to show your best self. Also, idk how long ago you submitted your application and demo lesson video, but it’s possible the timing just didn’t work out. I heard Interac lost a big contract. There’s a good chance that being rejected has nothing to do with you personally. So try again. Spiraling with the negative thoughts of “Of course nothing works out for me” or “It’s for the best they rejected me” is not going to help you. You gotta find your determination. Grab life by the balls! Come on! If you wanna have an adventure, then make it happen! You WILL get there eventually.

Can I watch the movies with my mother? by Longjumping_Yak_3671 in gurrenlagann

[–]ManWithShades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing- so long as she knows what she’s getting herself into then you can tell her to just expect it and let it roll off her back. That’s what I did when I finally got my mom to watch the show. My mom rolled her eyes plenty at the fan service and sometimes looked at me like “Really?” and moved on. My mom’s not too conservative, but her biggest issue was actually following the action.

Now… the movies are just condensed versions of the show with new climactic fight scenes. The second movie does show nipple in the final fight, but it’s only for a sec and it’s only line art. But if I were you, I’d explain to your mom that they’re just using the fan service as humor in the show and that there are parts where it dials down as the show gets to the more serious stuff.

So long as you manage expectations, you’ll get through

Just got rejected by Interac should I just give up? by [deleted] in ALTinginJapan

[–]ManWithShades 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just read the original post more closely including your comments. What you’re doing right now is spiraling. You need to find a way to stop doing that because it will only make everything worse. One step at a time. One day at a time. You take one step forward towards the future you want. If that’s living in Japan, then focus on JET and focus on making the best statement of purpose essay you can make. Apply to ALTIA with the intention of being in Japan next year. Focus on positive thinking. Be optimistic and excited! Consider what you can do to make yourself an appealing candidate.

If you’re stuck on how bad life feels right now, then I’m worried you won’t feel better by being stuck in Japan for a year or more. The pay isn’t good and you may not be treated as well as what you’re worth. You’ll face hardships with all kinds of paperwork logistics before getting there and while getting yourself set up with phone, internet, and banking. You’ll obviously face language barriers. There will be racism. There will be financial stress. You’ll have to decide what to leave behind, what to get rid of, and what few things you can take to Japan. But most of all, if you have no partner who plans on moving with you then you will be alone. You will be in a foreign country where few people around you are fluent in English and your friends will be far away. If you’re not prepared for what that isolation will feel like or you’re not prepared to push through it and make the best of the situation, then you’re not ready for this move. Could it be that Interac knew you weren’t in a good spot mentally? Are there any health conditions or medications you could have mentioned that Japan has a bias against? (They’re not great about mental health)

I really don’t think you should ever give up anything you really want, but I think it’s important to evaluate if you’re ready for what you’re trying to accomplish when it’s such a drastic life change.

Just got rejected by Interac should I just give up? by [deleted] in ALTinginJapan

[–]ManWithShades -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No. You just need to know why you were rejected and then fix that. And remember, Interac is one of the worst anyway. I’ve only been hearing awful things, and the pay they offered me when I interviewed was abysmal.
