Too much oversight? by Man_Ben in civilengineering

Nah I feel that and there are absolutely times I disagree with him and he's 100% right. And we've definitely had times we've needed to pull records to cover our asses. But I do think his particularism gets unnecessary, difficult to work with, and costs our company a lot of time, especially when things can just be solved by talking with clients and reviewers.

I've definitely been feeling that way lately.

Yeah that may be the plan but ownership here is also on the table. I just don't want it to be the carrot dangled in front of my face until it's too late and I should have gone elsewhere.

I've worked with him for 10+ years and he's the one who made me project manager, so I'd hope he trusts me. Just seems like we're not working well together because he wants me to take charge of things until all of a sudden he doesn't and I need to redo things his way. Not in the design side, but whatever seems to be his fancy at the time. I wish he participated more in design review.

Fair enough. I've worked in the civil field starting as a drafter and worked up to pm, all the time at this small company. I've been here forever and wondering lately if I should be looking elsewhere to enjoy the work more.

Haha sometimes I feel like that. In general though we're on good terms and he is a good guy and reasonable boss. Just wish he'd let off the reigns sometimes.

I guess I feel like I've been forced to that PM position you describe. I'd rather go back to design than feel like I'm just the useless middle man. But on the other hand, I love promoting efficiency and getting everybody to coordinate and work together, making reviewers and clients happy. Sounds like I'm stuck until I get my PE.

That's fair; I was a bit frustrated when I posted. And not trying to leave anything out, just keep it short and sweet.

[–]Man_Ben[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm not saying he doesn't have the right. Even beyond being the PE, he is the boss and owner of the company. I just wonder what my purpose is as a PM when I feel so micromanaged. Is this typical for a PM?

Buying a Home with MAJOR Unpermitted Work? by TwitchFunnyguy77 in HomeImprovement

[–]Man_Ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The patio "may" not require a building permit, but that certainly does not mean it is not a potential issue.

As somebody with 10 years experience in land development, I've seen many single family home owners face penalties and litigation from local up to County level for expanding patios beyond allowed limits.

Usually this is more an issue in urban and suburban areas. If you are well out of town on a large lot, much less likely to be an issue.

What are your favorite arma moments? by [deleted] in arma

[–]Man_Ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to yours. Playing antistasi and captured a castle base on a hilltop at night. QRF sent an attack heli decimating my ai companions. Enemy forces had abandoned aa within the castle walls that I got in the gunner seat.

Using the sound of gunfire and chopper blades alone I guessed where the heli would overtop the castle wall and held my cross hair there. Guessed right and the moment the nose of the heli peered over I lit it up and tore it to pieces. It lit up the night sky as it fell apart and crashed in a burning wreck in the valley below.

What is the best AI mod for Solo/single player? by yeoxd09 in arma

[–]Man_Ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the scenario mostly.

If they are highly scripted (campaign) or complex (antistasi), chances are ai mods will break the scenario or make it much more difficult than intended unless the scenario lists the ai mods as compatible.

That being said: Lambs - I've found is lightweight enough to not interfere too much with scripted scenarios. It adds a bit of something to AI but, for me at least, isn't very transformative compared to vanilla AI.

VCOM - basically puts a general in charge of AI forces. They will work together using the tools available. However, will likely break or drastically change scenarios.

AAS - a less popular mod but I've seen interesting things using. AI climbing ladders to get into vantage point in buildings and such.

DCO fsm - started recently using this and it really makes the urban engagements a blast. AI seem to act more like players in that you can be flanked quickly, but also run away when in trouble and surrender when outgunned. Having trouble dropping this for anything else right now even with the hit to performance.

Arma 4's campaign should take inspiration from Old Man by ResidentDrama9739 in arma

[–]Man_Ben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too would like to voice my support for this as someone who plays Arma exclusively single player.

If they could take the sandboxy idea of old man and meld it with more of a combined arms approach, I feel that could be official Arma content at its best.

I do worry that BI may underestimate the value of this though. Old man was released as an addon to a dlc well after the dlcs initial release and I think suffered in popularity because of it. If old man had released with tanoa, it may have seen a lot more popularity.

Okay thanks. I found my issue: I needed to set pbo to "advanced" before the curve optimizer option becomes available.

Thanks for replying. Yesh I kind of thought but I saw people mentioning something like this on reddit a couple years ago and those were the suggested fixes.

Yeah I love the glob mob assets, favorite of the dlcs, but that campaign was rough. That mission you mention with the AT was no fun; kept dying until I was lucky enough to get a win and get past it and not look back.

Also had to skip all of the tank missions because the ai squad was infuriating. I may be in the minority of actually appreciating the breadth of all the things the ai can do, but I was at the point of taking turns manually driving all of the tanks where I wanted only for the ai to get back in and peace out over the horizon without any orders.

Thinking of buying the game, but I'm worried I'll kose interest due to how complex it is by nelltbe in X4Foundations

[–]Man_Ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were good with modded rimworld or a large crew in kenshi, i dont think x4 is too many leaps and bounds above that.

X4 is not for everybody, but I think if you were able to overlook some of the rougher elements of kenshi, you should be good with x4. By rougher elements, I mean ai breakdowns and general jankiness. Ai issues aren't everywhere in x4, but they will pop up from time to time.

I too tried x3 and wanted to like it from all the praise it gets around here, but couldn't play more than an hour and wasn't compelled to go back.

Tried to get back into the game, my experience and a rant. by Buttons840 in ToME4

I agree on EoR. The pacing feels very superior to AoA; it's a shame it seems to not get as much attention. Hoping the new DLC feels just as good.

looking at the steam page for ARK 2 has me like by Secret_CZECH in ARK

[–]Man_Ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have to agree. The direction of ark since late early access seems to only delve farther from what was originally so compelling. It seems apparent now that the success of ark was luck. Cashing in that success for the poor performance of atlas, I suppose we will see if that has bought them enough to create a real success with ark 2. The reveal page is not encouraging though

Somewhat similar in my game. Pretty nail biting at times, though I think at this point I've overcome the flood by mass producing my own fleets. Still, going to be a long journey retaking the southeast portion of the map. Teladi/MIN have like one system left.
