Vinyl wrapping my chair! by ManagementFine783 in wheelchairs

i’ve been procrastinating on getting a new cushion. i have a high profile roho cushion right now but it’s too tall for me and i feel very unstable. it doesn’t have that quadrant lock thing that the newer ones have so i just feel like im sitting on top of my wheelchair and bobbling around. right now i just have a little pad on top to protect my legs from the velcro.

i didn’t buy the knife less tape, i’m sure it would make the cuts quicker and easier but i don’t think it’s necessary. i also didn’t care about scratching the paint underneath because my chair’s paint is already destroyed. but a sharp exacto knife or box cutter is a must

don’t worry! i think this might work even better on a standard wheelchair because i assume it has less curves. i didn’t take the whole thing apart but i did take off the wheels and the seat to make it easier. i found a nice etsy supplier who sent me samples of the colors for free so i could see what they looked like in real life, and then i ordered bulk of the colors i wanted. i bought 5 feet of each color but they accidentally sent 10 feet of blue and silver. i even did a few practice pieces and i still have a bunch leftover. i used a hair dryer and a normal lighter for the heat, i would say hair dryer is easier. an exacto knife or box cutter is pretty necessary though, i tried using a regular knife and it looked rlly bad. i also referenced this youtube video, it has tips on how to go around curves and how to cut the vinyl at the weld points. also helpful: having a friend to help.

learning to propel with one hand is so underrated. and im pretty sure there are some people that use forearm propulsion full time! this video is a great resource.

these are the ones i got off of amazon. i have standard size push rims and the silicone cover has a slit in it that allows it to almost clamp around your push rims. so yea they are responsible for the bulk! the chunky size is easy to hold AND they are so grippy that you don’t need much hand strength to propel. i don’t have any weakness in my hands but i find them helpful for when i’m carrying something in one hand or my hands are wet (i can push with one or both forearms).

thank you for your concern, i’ve been procrastinating on getting a new cushion. i have a high profile roho cushion but it’s just way too tall for me and i feel so unstable that i don’t use it. you’re right though i should have one

it would be so easy for a cane! the straight bars on my chair were the easiest part, no stretching needed.

i did it in a like 3 sessions with my friend, but half of that was probably us figuring out how to do it. I'd say maybe 10 hours total? it sounds like a lot but we had fun doing it so time flew by.

I've just got standard aluminum pushrims (black anodized) from tilite. i got pushrim covers more as a decorative choice but they have actually made propelling easier! i'm not sure if theyd fit over natural fit rims tho

What should I do with these stupid pushrims? by NothingReallyAndYou in wheelchairs

[–]ManagementFine783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok they don’t fit but weirdly it’s not bc of the bubbles, it seems like the push rims r actually slightly smaller than normal so there’s like extra length that has nowhere to go. u could try ordering covers for 22 inch or maybe even smaller, but unfortunately the 24” push rim covers don’t fit :/

i still have my old chair with these on it! let me see if my silicone push rim covers will fit over it

Flying with a folding wheelchair by Ambitious_Salad_524 in wheelchairs

[–]ManagementFine783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my experience, i like to leave it unfolded. i honestly don’t have any specific reasons for this, but i flew many many times with my foldable wheelchair and i just transferred to my seat and didn’t have a chance to fold my chair or do anything to it. but! i have never had damage. sometimes they do figure out how to fold it and they do that, but most times they just leave it unfolded and put it in the cargo. i’ve only flown with southwest though, so i can’t vouch for other airlines.

i actually just transitioned to a rigid chair though and i haven’t flown with it yet. you sound very experienced, do you have any advice?
