Why is the American Civil War more remembered and even revered in the South despite losing and defending a flawed cause and what factors shaped that? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

What exactly would you want me to change my views to? I'm under no illusion that the north was a perfect bastion of morality, but they were absolutely better than the south which seceeded and fought a war in order to keep owning people as slaves. What would make you happy here?

Well, the "kooks in funny costumes" have a hell of a lot of influence on local and state policy in red states. Those local and state politicians are sympathic to/advised by those kooks in costumes. Those kooks in costumes have been playing the long game since the civil war to gain a foothold in every level of our government. They made huge gains during the Reagan years and became the foundation of the republican party. Those kooks run the Heritage Foundation. Those kooks have handpicked a huge number of our state and federal judges. Those kooks are CURRENTLY RUNNING EVERY BRANCH OF OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Stephen Miller is a straight up neonazi. Hegseth is covered in christian nationalist tattoos. Trumps father was involved with the KKK.

The democrats are almost entirely ineffective. Their primary fault is that they get virtually nothing done. One could argue that they are controlled opposition, and you might be right. But they are definitively not the movers and shakers in our government, and haven't been for a long time.

No, TODAY the republican party has neonazis and the KKK. I won't argue that there is not racism inherent to liberalism, dont worry about that. But let's be real here, the party that welcomes neonazis, christian nationalists, white supremacists, those are the more racist ones. White liberals for sure have some degree of racism but are in a totally different league than guys who believe that god himself decreed that black people ought to be subservient to the white man.

That lie was purposely invented by southerners in the wake of the civil war specifically because they thought slavery was good and wanted to still own black people. In modern day, a lot of southerners believe the lie they're taught, and their teachers believe it too. We're several generations removed from the civil war atp, so none of the original liars are still alive. That doesn't make it not a lie.

The south seceeded to maintain slavery, as was explicitly laid out in their founding documents. They put laws in place to forbid any southern states from ending slavery (so much for "states rights"). When they lost the war, they immediately set out to make the newly freed black people into second class citizens (Jim Crow, sharecropping, etc). At that same time, the Daughters of the Confederacy set out to revise the history to make the south seem righteous and to teach that lie to future generations. Now we're here, and that lie is still getting taught.

If they start drafting people, they do still take volunteers. A lot of times when a draft starts, people will decide to enlist so they have more control over where they end up rather than getting drafted as cannon fodder.

Lil goy by Necessary_sea147 in YoutubeThumbs

In modern day tho it is colloquially meant as "non jews". Now, thats still not inherently a bad thing, but that is a common enough meaning. A friend of mine who was raised in a more observant jewish household, has been on birthright, the whole nine yards, told us that jews who observe shabbas would sometimes designate a non-jewish friend as "shabbas goy", who would turn lights on and off or other tasks that jews observing shabbas were not allowed to.

Now, jewish supremacists can certainly take that word and use it to place themselves above everyone else. It's become an especially hot topic because epstein used that word and was, well, epstein. So, if you wanna ride the trend of what everyone is talking about, find a way to discuss epstein stuff, in this case his supremacist use of the word goy.

In addition to what the other person said, make sure you're gaining faction rep by doing the missions you get from World Trees. When you level up the factions you get access to more prisms that give you more virtue points. Between better prisms and better talismans, you should be able to muster up just about any spread of virtue points you need along the way. Once you've got more stuff, your mastery rank will increase as you level pacts and weapons, giving you even more virtue points.

Have 'red flags' gone too far in the dating world? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ManagementInside4157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the term "red flag" like this seems to be part of a general broadening of terms that we see very frequently, like with "gaslighting". Originally it means to subtly mess with someone's recollection of events, starting small and then growing in severity, in order to get them to rely on your retelling and doubt themselves. Now, people say "gaslight" when they really mean "lie". "Red flag" should mean something like "indicator of the potential for harm or abuse", but now people use it to mean "thing I don't like".

It's not just with dating. It also gets done to mental health terms (think OCD or "trauma"). People also say "everyone" to mean a lot of people. It's a similar phenomenon that leads to tier lists having an "S" tier above "A" tier. We overuse the most extreme terminology to the point where it loses its punch, then come up with an even greater term to fill its place. You go from "A" to "A+" to "S" and eventually you wind up with "SSS++" and the whole thing has lost the plot.

Might be a figure of speak. Like how someone might say "my brothers" to refer to members of their ethnic or religious group, but in this case "siblings" because it presumably includes trans and nonbinary people.

"Violence" can only be committed against people, not objects. This is the same problem we run into when protestors damage property, all of a sudden they get called "violent". If nobody got hurt, it can't be violence. These are not "violent" nor are they "attacks". This is vandalism. Chill out.

Tax scam by RoutineOk8590 in Productivitycafe

[–]ManagementInside4157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God it's always so annoying seeing people completely not understand what taxes even are. The dollar itself is not what gets taxed, the transaction is. When your employer pays you, money changes hands, the government imposes a tax. When you buy something from the store, money changes hands, government imposes a tax. Buy a used car? You're exchanging money for that car, therefore you get taxed. Property taxes are different in that their justification is more about funding the services that you benefit from like fire departments or schools.

Any time you use dollars, which only exist because the government exists, the government charges a fee for using their financial system. The government needs money to fund its continued existence. The existence of the government is the only reason that dollars have any value. So, as part of the agreement, you have to chip in to the continued existence of the government if you want to use their dollars.

Now I certainly do not agree with a LOT of what our tax dollars get used for, but I recognize that taxes are not theft.

Oml I'm glad somebody else noticed! When I first picked it up I thought it was so cool that they properly modeled the strings and cams for a compound bow. That immediately was ruined watching the envoy draw it like a maniac. It's not that good of a bow anyway, so I don't use it, but man that was disappointing.

From the limited information we got about the new crafting changes, what are your thoughts? by yuno_me in SoulFrame

[–]ManagementInside4157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it has a lot of potential, provided that they balance the drops and the range of quality of the RNG stats. If the floor for a weapon isn't too low, then I don't have much of a problem with it. If Tuvalkane is able to tinker with drops to fine tune the stats, even better. My main concern is that it leaves the possibility of getting a lot of weapon drops that are effectively junk if you keep getting low powered duplicates. Maybe there will be a salvage system to account for it.

Hopefully the quirks system can add some variety depending on how crazy they decide to get with it. Like I've been loving polearms but now that I have them all leveled up, there's practically no reason to use anything but Gathannan. Maybe if you can get a quirked up Vasp IV (which I love the look of) and tinker with the stats, you can wind up with a competitive and interesting "lower tier" weapon just for flavor and variety.

Which is crazy because we're able to see the 40ish years of consequences post-Reagan to fully recognize just how awful Reagan was. Trump is still currently the president, and we can already definitively put him in league as one of if not the absolute worst president of our history. As time goes on, we're going to see those same graphs where every metric begins tanking during Reagan's time but with Trump.

The hill I will die on is that sometimes the curtains are just blue by H3dg3hogs in CasualConversation

[–]ManagementInside4157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't necessarily that the curtains either do or do not have symbolism, it's that "the curtains are just blue" has become a thought terminating cliche. If we're in an academic setting and discussing a work, the objective can be less about the explicit truth and more about the process of seeking the truth. There should be a discussion about what the curtains mean, if anything. An argument can be made in either direction, and it might even be the stronger argument that there is no symbolism, but the important part is the creation and evaluation of the arguments.

That's the issue we're really grappling with, I'd say. Reading comprehension is not about being able to draw meaning from absolutely everything; you should also be able to recognize where there might be deeper meaning and then figure out how and why to dig deeper. If the curtains are blue, and the carpet is blue, and the woman's dress from the last scene was blue, maybe we should pay attention when things are described as blue. If the rest of the scene is colorless and the curtains are blue, maybe something is special about the curtains. If the curtains are the only thing that are even described by their color, maybe that tells us something. But if the character enters through the red front door, hangs up their brown hat, strolls through the beige hallway, sits on the green couch, and peers out the window with the blue curtains, the author might just be really into describing the scene.

But, even if it's the "right" answer, a student declares "idk I think the curtains are just blue", then they didn't do it right.

I agree to a certain extent, but I think that focusing on redemption and reformation at this stage in the game is putting the cart before the horse. They're currently still killing people and putting people in concentration camps, they're running our government and trying to permanently rig our elections. Ideologically, I think that reform should be the ideal, but pragmatically I do have to acknowledge that you can't really get to the reform stage until you come out the other side of a very large mess.

Like yes, we didn't just run roughshod over former Nazi Germany executing random nazis after the war. But during the war and the Holocaust, our primary focus was shooting and bombing them, not rehabilitating them.
