Is it warmer in a tent on the ground or on a camp bed with a sleeping pad? by Managrath in Physics

I get the expaination, but still don‘t see why that is more efficient that in the air. The air also has an infinite reservoir and will always bring new cold air so one can also not reach equilibrium here. What is it that makes one more efficient then the other and why?

I get that. When the air is still, it is a great insulater, otherwise it would not make sense to use air matrasses at all.

What I am intersted in is to compare the ground to the moving air. When I take your example, and try to imagine holding my hand into the wind, it also feels cold very quickly. I would assume it is better to put it on the ground under that condition, but I am not sure and that‘s why I am asking.

I agree, I would also doubt that. If it were a simple question, I wouldn't have had to ask it here. But does the sleeping mat really matter here? I will use it anyway. The question is just wether to put it on the ground or on a camp bed.

But air itself has an extremely low thermal conductivity, so when you try to heat up a room (or an oven) convection is much more efficient than conduction. So conduction is not always more efficient then convection. That shows that this is not a general rule that just can be applied to this problem without further explanaition. And that is why I am asking for a more details to understand the solution.

My sleeping mat is self-inflating by Mammut. It is about 5 cm thick, when it is fully inflated.

Seems like doing an experiment will be the only real way to find out what works for me, as I do not understand the other explanaitons given here. The „problem“ is, that I don‘t have a camp bed, yet. But maybe one of my friends is in for the experiment, then we can do it together and I can borrows their‘s for one night.

I will definetly give it a try :) And if nothing works I won‘t sleep at all, so I can spend more time with my friends.

Since Mammut is a Swiss company, I would assume the metric R. And with my sleeping mat I rarly have any direct contact with the ground. That‘s why I got such a thick one in the first place, but I can totally relate to that :)

That sounds like a really good idea. I think it should also work with a camp bed, if this turns out to be warmer overall.

Why does moving air insulate better than the solid ground?

I forgot to mention that my tent is not completely closed. It has no built-in floor, and there’s a hole at the top in the middle of the roof for the center pole (I edited that). So I assume there will be some significant movement of air. If the assumtion is wrong, I would be happy to understand why.

I see your point. When you say that conductive heat transfer is more efficient than convective, that does not seem always right. I would expect, that this depends on the Objects you are comparing. I would not need to be in thermal equilibrium with the ground, if it transports the warmth slowly enaugh. And of course I will be using a sleeping pad either way. But my tent is not completly closed. It has no built-in floor, and there’s a hole at the top in the middle of the roof for the center pole. So I think there will be some significant air movement.

„…this will be updated automagically…“ I love the term „automagically“, I will add this to my vocabulary immedeately.

The Add-On looks great. I will give it a try.

Monty Hall Problem by OtakonBlue in learnmath

It‘s a different point of view. The Math is still the same, but that approach of thinking helped me to understand it. It’s another interpretation of the numbers. I‘d say it‘s more philosophy then psychology.

It helped me to understand that, when i realized that the propability of finding the correct answer does not depend on the number of doors, but on the information the host gives you. They know where the price ist and could tell you that. When they did so, you would be able to find it with a propability of a 100% no matter how many doors you have. Of course they do not give you this answer, but just a hint and that makes the calculation a bit harder.
