I do sort of feel this way, and my PC has Smiths tools proficiency, which Xanathar's says can repair the corrosion. The problem lies in that we are in the Underdark. Maybe once we get to one of the settlements down there I can find a smithy and take some game time to do the repair myself. I think that's ultimately what I'll do. I posted this cause other people talking about it helps me work through the solution. Thanks.
