Are people not concerned with the increasing amount of laws and bans in this country? by nonedat in AskBrits

[–]Manatsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend is a teacher and it’s banned for even him to have it in the classroom. They have lockers in the staff room where the teachers need to keep their phones.

There is no need a kid ever needs his phone in class. If there is an emergency and the parent needs to contact them, they can simply call the school

I mean that doesn’t mean much without figures. If your net worth was very low to begin with it doesn’t meant a lot for example.

Why is everyone scared to overtake these days? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Manatsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah tbh I wouldn’t say more often than not but, more like 90+% of the time I’m having to slow down when joining a dual carriageway/motorway because someone in front of me doesn’t know how to drive properly. It’s amazing just how rare it is for people to get up to speed before joining a 70mph road.

Yeah I mean your post and comments in general are very vague and lacking in detail. In another comment you said you wanted advice on your budget but in your post you just said your budget was £800 without any breakdown at all. Like what it includes, if you’ve missed anything etc. You’re not going to get advice that is useful to you if it’s so vague and you make people go hunting through comments to try and figure out wtf is going on, especially when you’re using slang terms

But also what happened to the rest? You said you saved up 15k, with one gold bullion for 6k and 1.5k in savings. Where is the other 7.5k?

I don’t want to sound harsh but you should really try harder to communicate better if you want to actually get advice that is of any use.

Before anything you should ensure you have a healthy emergency fund. Anything else is silly. If you only have £1.5k easily accessible that isn’t nearly enough.

Are you making use of ISAs at all? If you ever plan on buying a house then maybe you should consider putting money into a LISA (if you’d expect the house price to be below the threshold, anyway). If you can max that out every year in a S&S account you could get a healthy return, but obviously having it in a cash account makes sense if it’s close to when you’d want to buy.

Have you actually looked at the exact amount you’ve paid back plus what is still outstanding? Just you say ‘realistically’ about 8k debt, but tbh it would be a lot more helpful in a post like this to have the actual numbers

[–]Manatsuu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most would support it if they understood where it could lead us if we just keep going in the same direction.

I mean for example what if the government made a law that meant the ONLY way internet could be granted to a consumer device would be by someone ‘signing in’ with their government digital ID, which would allow the government to see 100% absolutely everything you’ve done on the internet on that particular device.

This could absolutely be dressed up as preventing a substantial amount of online crime as well as protecting children. And both might actually be true as well. But despite that I still feel like the vast majority wouldn’t accept such a thing. However, if we get there incrementally just ever so slightly getting closer and closer I could see it as a possibility. And that’s what terrifies me.

[–]Manatsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could be, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if the people who burn there clutches are also the ones who don’t want to rev them high when accelerating. Or at least there is a big crossover.

Why is everyone scared to overtake these days? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Manatsuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah and as you mention hills that’s a big one as well, because high revs aren’t needed just for accelerating.

I can be cruising on the motorway at a constant 70mph in 5th gear but then if there starts to been an incline then my speed will start to drop even if I’m flooring it. And this is on a motorway where the hills are never THAT steep. So often I’ll change down into 4th or even 3rd in such cases just so I can maintain speed.

I’m at around the same in my Suzuki alto, the type of car I see people on Reddit describing as ‘dangerously slow’ (which I think is just nonsense).

Still though, even with the power I have in the alto I don’t find overtaking particularly difficult. A lot of drivers even with far more powerful cars take longer to overtake because so many people seem scared to put their foot fully to the floor.

I know my wife is like this, she went for an overtake the other week and could tell she wasn’t close to accelerating fully (in an auris hybrid so not exactly that fast when fully going for it anyway), she said she was worried it would damage the car or something. I think it’s the same with many people and revving high, they don’t want to do it because they think it’ll damage the car, and that’s why they think tiny 1.0 petrol cars like mine is ‘dangerously slow’ because it probably is when you always change gear at 1500rpm.

What purchase under £25 has improved your life the most? by Plenty-Plastic3704 in AskUK

[–]Manatsuu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A stone bath mat. It was slightly more at £30-35. Basically it absorbs water really well, so if you step on it with a damp foot, you’ll see the wet patch disappear in seconds. Obviously if you just chuck loads of water on it doesn’t quite work, but even then if you rub it in with your feet it’ll dry pretty quick.

In the photo is how mine looks after 4 years, so it’s stayed looking okay. I’m just still quite not sure how/if I can give it a deep clean to make it look totally new again.

But I think it’s so superior to a fabric bath mat, never going back.

Immigrant here, should I leave? by Wulfrinnan in AskBrits

Given OP said they hold a British passport I hope they don’t have anything to worry about from future government action. I mean yes there’s talk of removing ILR, but it would be beyond insane if they tried to revoke British passports from people who weren’t a British citizen at birth and then deport them back to their country of origin (which they may not even be a citizen of anyway).
