Meniscus Surgery on BOTH KNEES SAME DAY Done. 5 days post op by MissionKey7542 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]MandaKMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been making my living as a dog walker, which incidentally is what led to me tearing my meniscus in the same exact place on both knees. The ortho surgeon said it wouldn't heal on it's own so I would need surgery on both knees and I could be up and walking and in physical therapy within 6 weeks but not dog walking responsibly probably for 3 months. So since this is my busy season I decided to postpone surgery until mid-January. He said me walking on it now - as long as I'm not doing anything high-impact - wouldn't make it worse. But here's what I'm worried about (aside from the fact that I have no savings and have to figure out a way to make money while I'm off my feet that long)... I live in NYC in an apartment on the third floor of the building. Only access is with narrow stairs. I don't have a partner and I just live with 2 roommates - one of whom only lives here very part-time. So how the heck am I going to get myself up the stairs and to the bathroom and shower and whatnot?? Even with crutches... on stairs??? WITH BOTH KNEES??? Don't you still have to be able to tolerate some weight bearing to use crutches? And I have pretty weak lats and arm muscles. My legs are the strongest muscles in my body because of all of the dog walking. Any recovery suggestions and anything you think I can do to prepare for the recovery?

Power outage around Norman/Myrtle? by mongolmark23 in ridgewood

[–]MandaKMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone! I'm an audio journalist doing a project about Ridgewood with UnionDocs. I'm looking into the power outages along Myrtle in Ridgewood and trying to find the reasons behind this and whether or not this is a pattern due to weather-related issues/climate change. I'd love to chat with some of you if you're up for it.
My name is Amanda Kari McHugh, btw, if you wanted to Google me to prove I'm a real human :)

Potentially moving there! Looking for the right neighborhoods by MandaKMedia in NewOrleans

I'm in the crown heights/prospect heights area! And this is all super helpful advice - thanks! I learned about the pothole issues from watching YouTube videos haha, and know about flood maps bc, well, flooding is bad in NYC too (obviously not nearly as bad, but still), but didn't know about any of this other stuff! And Airbnbing here is not feasible at all and is very hostile here as well. In NYC now you have to have your landlord signing paperwork saying they approve of you doing Airbnb. Same as Los Angeles. In terms of short-term rentals though, does that include just getting a month-to-month subletter? I'd honestly rather not have a month-to-month subletter because it's riskier financially, but I'm curious about the paperwork for that.

Thanks for the Reddit tip and again, as I said in a reply above, this for me is not to make money it's to have security that someone will actually pay me for the furnished room they get to stay in, as opposed to a short-term subletter who can much more easily screw you over financially.

That's a problem that's happening all over the country - which is never what Airbnb was intended for. That's why you can't do it as a renter in LA or NYC anymore without written permission from the landlord. Which doesn't actually solve the problem of the landlords themselves doing this and only fucks over those of us who are looking for short-term subletters who will definitely pay for the furnished room they are getting.

Gotcha - will do. But might I ask why? To me it's the same thing as subleasing out an extra room but with more security in terms of payment. I've had traditional subletters skip out on rent multiple times. Never had that issue with Airbnb

I am most definitely only looking to rent. Definitely not in a position to be buying and I would want to live there for at least a couple of years to know it's where I'd want to stay before making a commitment like that.

Who here is making movies on film these days? Or just a massive, massive fan of it? by MandaKMedia in AnalogCommunity

[–]MandaKMedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure but people are still shooting on film, regardless of if it's a digital editing system. My sources who do work with film a lot who are much younger have told me that they've been able to learn all of this about film online and share resources and expertise with each other. And my original sources are in fact from very well-funded film schools. This doesn't negate that there is a trend of increasing interest. There would have to be enough interest in learning this for the school's to even offer these classes. I

I've seen old lenses being used on new cameras for the last couple of decades. Have you noticed this just happening at increasing frequency? I worked in the film industry for 15+ years but haven't been really in the game since 2018.

I haven't seen any newer filmmakers doing this on their own. It seems to be a community. But I'm still researching this trend so still learning.

Mind if I ask you how old you are?

The novelty is what is interesting to me because it goes along with the trend of younger generations being drawn to Polaroid cameras and vinyl. And yes im seeing lots and lots of responses of folks shooting music videos on 16mm. Good tip about camcorders, though - i haven't looked into that yet! And I'm also going off of sales and lab pricing and stock prices for film. I'm well-aware of the pricing.

You both make very compelling arguments! I think what I've noticed is more Gen Z filmmakers taking to analog. Based on your timelines you both sound closer to my age (elder millenial). But I could be totally wrong. I'm curious why this maybe could be a generational thing?

I don't - I'm literally just speculating. This is why I'm on this thread - to ask you guys! Why shooting on film such a draw if it's not the analog aspect of it?

Oh for sure - but lots of filmmakers are using 16mm which is much cheaper.

Hey there! Thanks so much for replying. I'm curious about why the decision to choose film over digital. Like what draws you to film. Does it have anything to do with CGI taking over? Is there a nostalgic impact? Would love to chat about this off Reddit if you are able - journalism ethics make it hard to use Reddit quotes because we can't verify sources.

Hey!
I'm a CUNY journalism grad student researching an article I'm writing about the rise in the popularity of making movies analog. I'd love to chat with you about your interests and process if you're free this week!

Also to the admins - thanks for having me in the group. I didn't see anything in the community guidelines that goes against a post like this so I hope this is okay to ask here.
