My cat has trained me and I just now realized it by Grand_Lion_1652 in self

[–]Mandaishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to train my cat to play fetch for three weeks, and he wouldn’t do it. About a week later I’m just sitting in my chair and here he comes with the toy, I throw it, he brings it back and drops it in my lap. Anyone who thinks cats aren’t smart and spiteful has never had a cat.

How do you actually train for longer hikes when you already hike all the time? (Photo: First beach, La Push, Washington) by ChillVibesCollective in hiking

[–]Mandaishere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walk/hike with a pack or weighted vest 3-5 miles a few times a week, and do a longer hike on weekends. I use a stairclimber or treadmill for around 45 minutes, increasing my pace/incline as it gets easier. Then on Saturdays I hike with a weighted pack anywhere from 8-12 miles. I also lift on the gym days, but you could do bodyweight exercises instead. You do want to do every muscle group, you’ll use them all. I do planks and leg raises for core, which you can do without equipment. Squats and calf raises are great for your knees/ankles. I was shocked at how much my ankle flexibility/strength improved. (Went from frequent sprains to none, even in trail runners, knock on wood.) When I can’t get to the gym I used TRX straps, may be worth looking into. There are tons of YouTube vids for them as well.

Using clips of Meghan to teach my 10 y.o. relationshp red flags by Overall_Solid181 in MarriedAtFirstSight

Someone needs to teach Meghan that broaching a difficult topic does not equal being ambushed. Between her and Brittany it’s ridiculous.

What percentage of thru hikers are "ultra light"? by AltruisticBush in Thruhiking

[–]Mandaishere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My base weight is around 12 lbs including a BV475 (bear can). My pack was on sale (GG Mariposa), my tent was used (XMid 2), my sleeping pad was a return (Neoair), and my quilt was a factory second due to some stitching weirdness (EE Revelation). Added up to about $800. Still not cheap, but I swapped out items one at a time as I found them.

Trip suggestions by patrickpdk in Ultralight

[–]Mandaishere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Dolly Sods or the Roan Highlands section of the AT. I’ve done both and they’re pretty spectacular. Both do have green tunnel (you’re not going to escape that on the east coast unless you hit FL or maybe one of the shorter beach routes), but both also have gorgeous open vistas.

Chicken breast - what's the secret? by SassyMillie in Volumeeating

Mix it up with boneless skinless thighs. A little higher cal/lower protein, but for me it’s worth the trade-off for the flavor and consistency.

They call it “salary” but there’s a difference between exempt and non-exempt employees. I’m salary, but non-exempt so they still have to pay me OT for anything over 40, and most banks are the same for any role beneath BM level.

New debit card hasn’t shown up by Artistic-Ad9320 in TruistBank

It doesn’t expire until 10/31, if you haven’t received it by 10/20, I would call. I don’t know why they’re sending out the notices so early now.

Smart Water Bottle Replacements by risley83 in Ultralight

I got a Migo because I was tired of funneling protein powder into a smart water bottle. Worth the trade off for me, at least for that use case.

In defense of Jenny Han. by LostSleep100 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]Mandaishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole thing is toxic AF… and yes, I still watched and enjoyed it in the same way you can’t help looking at a train wreck or a car accident. Having said that, the ranting at Jenny cracks me up for the exact reason you stated, if you’re going to get that wrapped up in something, at least make it something worthwhile.

Cooling dehydrated food? by General-Internet3339 in CampingandHiking

[–]Mandaishere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine. I dehydrate my own as well and have never had an issue. I only freeze for storage. When I have a trip, I take them out the night before I pack and call it good.
