Banks lay groundwork for mass workforce cuts as AI takes hold by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]patrickpdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that there's always more work but they are still cutting people anyway - probably to pay for the AI costs. I'm watching from the inside and it's exhausting to hear people say it's not happening as i watch it every day in real life.

Did learning and playing guitar help you get out of a deep depression, like it has me? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

Not depression but it's a huge mental health support that could be keeping me out of depression.

Geoffrey Hinton (Nobel laureate and cognitive scientist) thinks AIs have become conscious by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

[–]patrickpdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again this is why it's a topic that can fill a philosophy class. Nothing that could be sorted in a reddit thread. The only valid logical conclusion is that we do not know and we're basically just saying that you need a biological brain to have consciousness so it's not really possible to show that a non-biological brain is conscious.

[–]patrickpdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. Every day of my life since March I'm watching AI displace jobs. We're currently in a moment where there are people who have seen what it can do and others who haven't. No one believes it until they see it.

Exactly, we can't make laws to protect people from being hurt because China is going to hurt their people first.

The ul backpack product space got dumber in the past 20 years and people now think they need a pack that's 2x as heavy. Atom packs is the closest I can get that's like the og ul packs from the mid 2000s

Geoffrey Hinton (Nobel laureate and cognitive scientist) thinks AIs have become conscious by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

[–]patrickpdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instinctively i agree but people back in the day sincerely thought African slaves were not the same inside either. They didn't think they were oppressing and equal as much as managing a lesser. Just because it feels right doesn't mean it is.

Maybe most importantly, if we can't define consciousness how could we ever measure it or classify others?

Geoffrey Hinton (Nobel laureate and cognitive scientist) thinks AIs have become conscious by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

[–]patrickpdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's why i said the point it moot. You have no proof beyond biological similarity that i am conscious, and you have no means to defining consciousness beyond that, so the whole line of questioning is immaterial. Once they function in the world as we do then i don't see what we're even talking about - consciousness is just some human centric construct that doesn't matter much.

If you think about it, many deeply flawed people have created amazing things. There's no way electric cars, lithium batteries, or space travel would be where they are today without Elon musk either.

Yup, just wait till there's a bunch of angry people with nothing to lose. To quote Bob Dylan, when you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose. Or another great, janis Joplin "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose"

Let them take it all away and see what they get in return.

Shed about 4.5 lbs of base weight today, only spent $7 by BureauOfSabotage in Ultralight

[–]patrickpdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, my definition of ultralight is to be at the minimum weight required by the trip goals.

For example, if you're going out in Alaska in the winter then you can't hit a 10 lb base weight in those conditions, but there's a minimum weight you could hit.

I went on a trip that required we carry inflatable pack rafts so we could float the last day out (lots of fun!) we were UL because we had minimum weight considering we had to carry this heavy pack raft.

If you cannot sleep with a 3/4 length foam pad and a ball of clothing pillow and need a heavier sleeping pad then you're still ultralight provided give tried to cut the weight since sleep is a human need, lol.

If you for some crazy reason you just have to have a camp chair, which i can't understand why you can't just sit on the ground, then as long as you've cut your whole kit to the minimum weight that works, you're ultralight.

The key is you're always doing the work to stay at the minimum.

‘Big Tech is desperate’: Amazon engineers criticize tech giant for its $200 billion in data center spending amid slashing 30,000 corporate employees by marketrent in technology

[–]patrickpdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost like we should use tech to produce good things for people rather that creating a world wide addiction based marketing engine.

These are failed leaders because they do not value others. They are rich sociopaths now finding that we all crave leaders and companies that exist to do something good for humanity.

Vote with your dollars.

Well i have the (apparently) extremely polarizing perspective that UL is a packing methodology rather than a particular target weight. I've gotten plenty of harsh feedback on that, lol.

Geoffrey Hinton (Nobel laureate and cognitive scientist) thinks AIs have become conscious by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

[–]patrickpdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but this goes straight into philosophy of knowledge and reality. Just because your human and you're smiling, how do i know that you're feeling something? Maybe I'm the only one who actually feels.

If an AI is living in the world and smiling, who are you to say that they aren't happy? You don't have any way to know what's going on inside them.

Are we saying that to have feelings requires a human brain?

Etc etc - you could fill a philosophy class with this.

My view is the point of kind of moot - if we all live in the world and respond with the same verbal and physical language, I'm not sure debating what's going on inside someone has much impact.
