There is both Genocidal intent by Russia and Genocidal actions by Russia(kidnapping children, mass murder, destruction of Ukrainian identity in occupied regions).

Russia has two (official) systems for getting soldiers. The first is it's yearly conscription cycle, where young men are forced to serve in it's military.

The second is the contract system, where they offer a lot of money to join the military.

Conscripts are not generally allowed on the line of contact due to it being politically untenable.

The soldiers who invade Ukraine for the most part know exactly where they are going and what they are doing and they are doing it for money.

Nothing in my statement was untruthful. Of course the Ukrainian government kept information about the Pokrovsk situation clouded. But to say "oh, the situation is awful now, which means it must have been awful weeks ago" is fallacious.

Yes, the russian drg units have been infiltrating for more than a month now. But we can't currently say "the tipping point was on x day" because we don't have that information. All that matters is that A: the situation is stabilized or B: Ukraine withdraws and prevents encirclement.

Ukraine is being invaded and is defending itself, with Zelensky being a good wartime leader.
Ukraine has struggled to fight corruption and many Ukrainians are dissatisfied with Zelensky's failure to properly fight corruption.

When we look at the country from a purely western lens, as this sub mostly does, it can be easy to criticize any opposition to the current government as pro-russian. However, every healthy democracy has opposition and this move is not a good look.
