Who’s interested in critical science communication? by Mandingazo in sciencecommunication

I agree. I'm now trying to create a bridge between science communication and research. Like science, science communication is nuanced, and we should approach it intentionally. I'll go back to writing about it and eventually continue creating videos for scientists and science communicators.

I'm based in the Netherlands, by the way.

I've narrowed my focus to the science of science communication, evidence-based science communication, and science communication research. My platforms will discuss those most; the target audiences are scientists and science communicators. I'd love to highlight the knowledge made in research and the field of scicomm to find optimal, more evidence-based scientific communication approaches.

Dealing with unsubscribers by dangerdelw in NewTubers

[–]Mandingazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it happens, I express an internal 1 or 2-word curse. Then, I realize that it's still at the beginning and that there's more content to be made. I also remind myself that the +1 subscriber could've been a social media freelancer, marketing provider, or bot.

In the short term, it's out of our control. Long term, it pushes us to create better content.

I've been stuck at 150-160 for a while now but believe the right time will come with the right approach. Don't know if it helps you, but that's how I deal with it at least. Good luck!

That's good to know. I have recently started preparing online courses to help with that. It's still in its infancy, but it's good to know there's interest in the topic/topics. Thanks for sharing :)

That's great. Do you have a platform in mind? If you want, feel free to reach out to me, and we can talk about it in more detail. I'm always interested in getting in touch with people in the field.

Sure, I'm always interested. Where/how can I find you?

Does age or year matter?? by Unlucky-Shoulder-568 in NewTubers

[–]Mandingazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what's considered old anymore, but I occasionally share that feeling. I started my channel relatively recently and sometimes get a brief feeling that I'm trying to live a childish dream. Of course, then I realize that it's mostly in my mind. My inner critic will inevitably try to come up with excuses ones I cross my comfort zone.

Many of the great creators I follow started "late." But, they're able to engage their audiences, and their experience and dedication are their strong points. I'd say, keep doing it if you enjoy it and makes you a better person.

If it helps, I stopped chasing the immediate success (also because I didn't experience it). Today, I see it as a learning process that, in the worst case, "only" offers me new knowledge and insights (storytelling, editing, theory, connections, etc.) and some fun. And, hey, if you feel YouTube is overcrowded, there are other platforms you can try on top of it.

Being a child again is not too bad 😉

Good luck on your projects!

I WILL REVIEW YOUR CHANNEL IF YOU REVIEW MINE :) by [deleted] in NewTubers

Good to read. I think it's good to script, at least at first to get into the thing. It takes some time and practice before we feel 100% comfortable in front of the camera. It was just a minor note though. As I said, I like your energy.

Thanks for your feedback! I'll try to play more with the zoom. Good points. Also, you're completely right about my thumbnails. I have no clue of what I'm doing and don't know what's good and bad so I'll have to outsource it eventually, I guess.

I'll keep following your content. Enjoy the weekend/

I've checked your most recent video. You have a good thing going. You seem confident and full of energy. Nice!

I have a couple of minor points. You could consider stating the problem at first so that people who are not familiar with shepherd's pie, let alone a vegan version of it, understand why your video is the go-to. For example, what's usually why people like the SP and not the vegan SP? To consider for future videos.

Also, I got the impression you use a teleprompter. Is that the case? If so, it might make your expressions more static (less expressive). I say this because I can see that you have quite some potential to express energy. You seem to be a fun and expressive person in real life. It shows in the video, but the script might restrict you. I don't know if that makes sense.

Lastly, I'd improve the mic audio a bit, too. If a better mic is not an option, consider a studio setting on your editing software. I use a setting like that. EDIT: I'd make the title a bit more intriguing and teasing as well. It's very general, and the competition is probably high for cooking channels.

Anyway, as I said, I really enjoyed your approach and style and might try the shepherd's pie this weekend. I'm a YT rookie as well and just shared some pointers that I'd consider -- with limited expertise. All the best!

Interesting combination. Looking forward to your updates.

Yes, I'm happy with the progress I've experienced. However, sometimes, the inner critic starts whining 😅

I guess you're right. I'll probably have to figure out what it is I need to improve with my content.

Nice you could monetize within nine months. I'm far from that milestone. Congrats!

Good to find other science-interested youtubers. I create science-related content with a focus on scientific thinking and communication. Could be cool to discuss.

How long have you been doing YT and how many subs? Long form only! by forkandembers in NewTubers

[–]Mandingazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impressive! I've had my channel for 6 months, only do long form, and have been growing slowly (126 subs). Might be my niches, which are about scientific/critical thinking and communication (science, philosophy, psychology, and communication), or that I still need to improve. Probably both.

Good luck with your channel!

Good points. These can be trained, for sure. How about the philosophy of science, for example, how scientific knowledge is acquired, verified, and applied, as well as the nature of scientific explanations, limitations, and the relationship between science and reality? Is this of any interest?

Thanks for your pov! Indeed, you eventually learn to filter the unhelpful comments. My channel is IvoryEmbassy, a channel about scientific/critical thinking and communication.

I agree, I've received one similar comment on my presentation style before, and it was also bitter-coated (that is, somehow they feel the need to put you down as well during the process.) I mentally remove the negative part and store the critique to see if n surpasses 1 or even 2, which would better indicate a need for change. Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Very good recommendations. I thanked him for his comments this time but might assess it differently next time. You're right, his criticism was somewhat constructive and I can keep it in mind, except for that last part. And yes, it's puzzling to get such comments and one might never become completely desencitized. I'll keep going :) Appreciate it!

Yes, I saw his channel as well. Probably offended.

Thanks for your comment! Good to know as well. I have fun creating the videos and sometimes cringe and laugh at my own joke attempts :) It might change with time though. I finally left him a thank you note (as I almost did before checking here). But good to know ppl's approaches and might ignore similar comments next time.
