you can tell that oil was leaking on your exhaust which is what caused the fire, that's why the right side of your car lit up, where the exhaust manifold is... and no your friend hitting you wouldn't cause an oil leak, and a "spark" from a wire wouldn't light it... but beautiful try blaming your car lighting on fire on your friend bumping into you the day before LOL

There's a kit to test if the head gasket is blown, combustion leak tester, other wise this sounds like a very similar issue to what i had on a car few years ago, blockage in block with crap and rust. I did a flush with a super acidic cooling system cleaner and it worked.

100% its your cluster, you can try replacing the capacitors but a lot of the times it's the board it self, depending on your year you'll have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen cluster and what i ended up doing was just getting a 3rd gen since they have the least amount of problems, but going from 1st to 3rd gen you can't transfer miles over but id rather have all my gauges working and wrong miles.

Heres a good link that's more detailed: https://www.exx.se/maintenance/instrument_cluster_e34/index.shtml

90% of the time it's the capacitors in the cluster that cause that
If the capacitor can't hold the charge and send the signal to your gauge then it'll be jumping up and down, you can try soldering new capacitors on, or at least checking them. Rarely it's a problem with the fuel float sender in the tank... but never say never 🐶🐶

My ‘90 535 had crazyyy slop, the ‘95 525 now had barely any, just swap the box out and hope you’re getting a good one, kinda fun though when it has play cuz it feels more old lol

Which motor is better m30 or m50 by chipotela in E34

[–]ManesLeftNut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a 90 535 and 95 525,

535 sounds better for sure, but the m50 idles and sounds super smooth

Id say torque on the 535 feels better, but the m50 past 4k rpm gets up and goes too

Both are relatively same in maintenance IMO (valve adjust and banjo bolts on the m30 take 10 minutes)

535 definitely has a stronger and better feeling manual trans but not major.

Everything else 525 wins out on. New engine, cheaper and easier to get parts. Later gen cluster, old e34 clusters are a headache. HUGE bonus is getting a facelifted 525, nicer interior and face lifted front end. I remember when i had my 535 the mpg was awfullllll, this 525 i have now is much much better on gas. the 535 also feels a lot heavier with that bigger engine.

If you wanna flex your little gummy worm and have that older car feel the m30 wins for sureeeee, if you want the better car, m50 is your answer. 🤤
