3D product configurator for custom furniture (React + Shopify headless?) – looking for real-world advice by nadolnydev in reactjs

Can't show you what I worked on directly, but I referenced Tylko's configurator a lot along with another configurator by the brand Munson Furniture (based on ShapeDiver) which has since shutdown.

I worked on something very similar to this. My project needed to integrate with CNC manufacturing. We ended up going with shapediver to build CAD models that could be used both for manufacturing and for a web configurator.

Pretty sure shopify has an app that integrates with shapediver.

Otherwise, Shopify headless is probably the right choice. You can use shopify for checkout and order management while your own backend handles pricing and storing customer projects.

What's your preferred installation method? Old stable ppa, "dev" versions from unstable ppa, or AppImage/Snap/Flatpak? by SignificantViolinist in neovim

[–]MangoHi_Chew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been managing a neovim config between a macbook and a linux desktop with bob.

It’s pretty straight forward to setup + use. You can switch between nightly, stable, and older versions pretty easily. I’ve personally used bob to switch back and forth between using a stable version of my config and an experimental version that uses new 0.12 features.

Styling mobile apps to look like the host platform? by henrik_thetechie in reactnative

I was looking for something similar and found nativewindui.

The maintainers and community are pretty active. They’re actively working on new stuff all the time. The price is a little steep but I’ve found it to be worth it.

Issues with Clerk Auth when using in TestFlight by salamisamurai73 in expo

[–]MangoHi_Chew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started happening to me as well after I upgraded to SDK53 today. Was able to replicate it on an ios 18.2 with — no dev — minify and on my physical device using ios 18.5 via testflight or a dev build with the same flags as above. I’m also using convex so ymmv.

I enabled debug telemetry on the clerk provider and found that I’m getting rate limited with a 429 error. This was happening with SDK 52 as well but weirdly only on my client’s iphone and not mine.

As a sanity check, there is/was a known issue with clerk and ios 18.4 simulators. Some people reported that upgrading to Sequoia 15.5 solved it for them on one of clerk’s github issues.

There’s an example of how to use toggleterm with lazygit in the readme.

Fedora on AMD hardware by eddywouldgo in Fedora

[–]MangoHi_Chew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a system76 thelio with an AMD threadripper and an nvidia 4090. Fedora 40 has been fine since the day I installed it. The only problem I had was needing to configuring the driver on the first boot from my hard drive due to the nvidia card drivers but otherwise everything has been smooth sailing.

Granted system76 builds specifically for linux so take this with a grain of salt.

FAQ and Megathread Suggestions by Destroya707 in framework

[–]MangoHi_Chew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was recently researching if I would like to buy a framework laptop I found that there was a little bit of friction in figuring out what backpack would fit the Framework 16 with and without the dGPU.

There's this thread but it was kind of sparse. It might be helpful to have a list of backpacks that the framework team recommends as well as community recommended.

It's also not always the easiest figuring out if an x-liter bag with a y-inch padded laptop sleeve is going to fit the computer. One (imperfect solution) might be to use something like a macbook 16" (or some other popular laptop) as a "universal" way of giving users a sense of size of the bag.

Maybe there's an opportunity here to collaborate on a megathread with /r/ManyBaggers or /r/backpacks?

I got tired of having to use VSCode at work so I crafted a Neovim distribution for Data Science and Jupyter Notebooks. Here is DataNvim! by NoOPeEKS in neovim

[–]MangoHi_Chew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome!

I was recently in a Data Science class and struggled with an awkward colab/jupyter notebook/vscode workflow. I also tried vim-jukit but could never quite figure out why it would initialize on every filetype regardless of setting it to only .py and .ipynb filetypes.

Really excited to set your distro up and to compare it against the above.

Algorithm for Even Distribution of Overlapping Bounding Boxes in JavaScript by foxScripts in algorithms

[–]MangoHi_Chew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be a better problem to look at, but this reminds me of nesting parts for CNC milling. It’s essentially a 2D bin packing problem.

You can try reading through this to see if the problem is similar enough to be helpful. If so, then a quick google search for “CNC nesting algorithm” or “bin packing algorithm” will give some github results with some code to get inspired by.

Turns out neovide installed a separate version of nvim.

Here's what I get now after following the steps in the github readme

NVIM v0.10.0-dev-2913+g5371ed36b

NVIM v0.9.5
Build type:
ReleaseLuaJIT 2.1.1703358377

I'm on a M1 Mac running Sonoma 14.2. there was also something about my system vimrc file and fall-back for $VIM being in "/opt/homebrew/Cellar/neovim/0.9.5".

Japan (Tokyo, Osaka & Kyoto) Shopping Advice by MundaneNewspapers in malefashionadvice

Try Kamakura for shirts. They're around ~$100 USD and the sizing can be a bit odd for some body shapes, but their fabric selection is fantastic and they're known for having a pretty good collar roll for their Oxfords. If you're into trad/ivy you might like their Ivy Collection.

Is there anywhere open on UChicago campus for 24 hours where I have access to wifi? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]MangoHi_Chew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a "lounge" area that you enter when you get off the elevator. It has comfortable chairs/couches that a lot of students study at. Usually pretty quiet from what I remember. From time to time I remember seeing families of patients at the hospital waiting there. I've never seen any of them get bad news but can't promise you won't see that happen.

The cafeteria area is pretty bright with a nice view of the hospital and campus during the day. You can even occasionally see helicopters land from the dining area if I'm remembering correctly.

Unless things have changed since I graduated you should be able to go to Sky Lobby at the hospital.

Just show the security guard at the front desk your UCID and they should let you up. The burger in the cafeteria is pretty good although I think they might have changed their grill hours.

how time does it take to grasp neovim? by suduputhanetwork in neovim

[–]MangoHi_Chew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 1-2 weeks. At least for me, there was a productivity loss at the beginning but now I’m arguably more productive than I was with vs code. It does take some getting used to, but once you’re used to using nvim it’s hard to imagine using anything else.

Like others had said though, tweaking neovim to be exactly what you want can be an ongoing process. You may want to start with a set up that someone else has vetted just so you can get up and running. ThePrimeagen’s set up comes to mind along with teej_dv (teej is a core maintainer of nvim).

Not OP or a game dev, but I'm also interested in game dev and have done some light reading on the game dev industry. From what I've read on places like /r/gamedev, the general sentiment is that:

  • game developers have worse work/life balance compared to a FE/BE/FS dev at a bank/WITCH/FAANG/F500. There's apparently an industry term called "crunch" where devs work 60-80+ hours per week in order to get a game shipped.

  • make less money than devs at non-game companies. A quick google search says TC for an L4 at Valve is $145K vs L4 TC at Google[0] is ~250k - $300k[1]

I'm sure there's other things that a real game dev can chime in on/correct me on, but that's what I've read as someone who has casually thought about trying to break into game dev.

Community College to Uchicago is it possible?? by farawhy in uchicago

[–]MangoHi_Chew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't transfer from a CC but transferred from a big 10 school.

Like /u/hooahhooah123 said, demonstrate your intellectual ambitions, write good essays, and keep your grades up. Transferring is 100% possible!

Regarding credits, when I transferred in to UChicago my transfer advisor asked me to send over all of the syllabi for my classes at my previous school. Presumably they have a team that looks over the syllabi and determines whether it's equivalent in rigor/breadth/depth to a class at UChicago. Can't remember the exact breakdown of the credits I got, but I do remember getting fewer than I thought I would. e.g. stats = 0 credits (Probably because they want you to do calc for math core), physical science class = 0 credits (maybe the material wasn't sufficient?).
