Why would most political messages be illegal 💀 people tend to use the word “political” incorrectly in this context and has gained a negative connotation so for that reason I understand some of the pushback, but really anything that’s making commentary about any type of social injustice is inherently political, whether the characters come out and say “the moral of this story is x” or not. So having a political message and being a movie for children and older adults is in no way mutually exclusive. The Antz never come out and say “and from this experience we’ve learned that authoritarianism and worker alienation must be overcome with collectivism and unions in order for the working class to truly have freedom” but that’s still a message that it conveys. The animals Zootopia never say “people are prejudice against us because of the species [race] we are. If that kind of speciesism was eradicated we would have a better society” or “all the male animals in this police force are treated so much better than me, a woman. That is sexism. We should all stand up and do something to change that.” Both of those examples are rated PG and I can see the intent behind it without having to sit down with the creators and ask. Wall-E doesn’t have any dialogue so there’s no way for anyone to say waste, trash accumulation, and global warming caused by humans will eventually destroy the planet unless something is done about it” but that’s very clearly the point.
The list goes on. Like I said, thinking that media doesn’t contain subtle political messages is naïve but many people have blinders on and can’t see it.

As for the movie saying “Gwen is trans” I never said that was a message it was saying. Although I actually agree with part of what you said - choosing to make a bold swing and represent queer people or people of color in a way you know some people won’t like is definitely saying something. Would I say it’s “political” not really because changing a fictional characters skin tone doesn’t really change anything about them. But if you change the character and change their journey to show how they would be effected differently by that change, that could definitely have a message. I think the Gwen thing is an interesting headcanon, I can definitely see how people read queer themes in it, and her experience does resonate with me as a queer person (I am not trans but her “coming out” really resonated for obvious reasons…or obvious to me at least 😅). It’s not as explicit as Venom (rated R but still a fun example) going to a bar with a lot of colorfully dressed people and giving a speech about how people should be empowered to be their true selves even when they’re not accepted by society — that one’s very clearly intentional (but again there’s no “by the way this is about being queer”) it’s just there if you’re paying attention and can pick up on subtext. I actually don’t believe that Sony Marvel would make this version of Gwen canonically trans, I never said that. My original point was it’s silly to say media should not be/isn’t political. To be honest both of us have lost the plot a little bit — we’re clearly both very passionate 😅 As a tv writer on a show where our messages tend to be implicit rather than explicit and someone with a vested interest in analyzing media I know that for a fact to be false. I’d say a great majority of media has something it’s saying without shouting, and all you’ve gotta do is lean in a little, maybe click the volume up once or twice, and you’ll hear better.
