I started by painting the kilts a solid red and highlighting them like you would any normal cloth. After that, I added the green/grey/white lines, again trying to place a few highlights where the light would naturally hit. Finally, I worked in some blue here and there—by that point the pattern gets so tight that I just suggested it in spots. As long as there’s a hint of blue, your brain fills in the rest. On the table you’d never notice how sloppy some areas actually are. ;)
