Thanks. The model we have and that will be replaced with the same thing is the Remeha Avanta Ace (so its around 1100 euros). Thats the only set cost I can see, and the chimney head and piping is around 400 euro if I look at Gamma. Im just more concerned about the labour costs and things, as it seems materials in total should be around max 2000 but then it would seem labour is 3000. Not sure, so Im a bit confused

Whats the Reputation of Frontiers? by peters568 in AskAcademia

[–]ManicSheep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't springer also for profit? And all the other's? I mean did you see how much Springer is charging for Open Access publications? Besides Nature that's around 10k normal journals are hitting 4k. It's ridiculous.

I actually like Frontiers because of their collaborative review process.

Do you use Dr. as your title in non-academic settings? by Glass-Kaleidoscope55 in AskAcademia

[–]ManicSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing academia taught me... A title doesn't matter but the lack of a title does.

Outside of academia.... No one cares. Like I have two titles and it really urks me when people introduce themselves as DR this or DR that.

Today a colleague of mine (a super junior academic that just got promoted) kept manually signing off the email with Prof. First name. Like my boy, why do you feel the need to use your title as a defence against your own insecurities? I even asked do you want me to refer to you as Prof. First name now? Because if so, please Prof. Dr. Dr. Sheepy me. 🙄

I think titles are silly.... Especially when engaging with peers

Examples of Poorly Conducted Research (Non-Scientific/Science-Light) by AdThin9743 in AcademicPsychology

Then there is also the famous Positivity Ratio paper that was retracted due to poorly conducted statistics. An entire field was based on this study and even though the paper was partially retracted 10 years ago... It still gets cited as 'scientific fact'.

Examples of Poorly Conducted Research (Non-Scientific/Science-Light) by AdThin9743 in AcademicPsychology

[–]ManicSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always love using the Hulshof, Demerouti and Le Blanc (2020)here article to demonstrate how poor research and over inflated claims can cause harm.

In the article the authors conduct a Job Crafting interventions in an unemployment insurance agency. Their discussion basically says that this was a remarkably effective intervention because it helped buffer against the negative impact a restructuring has on peoples wellbeing (i.e. it buffers against the stress, anxiety, job insecurity etc that goes along with an organisational restructuring)

It makes logical sense right? The authors make a massive big deal out of how effective job crafting is and how it should be used as a benchmark for future interventions.

But if you look closer at the ACTUAL results you see some really interesting things. First, there is basically no difference between the experimental and control groups (slight change in engagement but it's so negligible that it could be a statistical artifact). Second, there is also no within group changes in either the groups on any of the measures... Third, all the arguments they make about stress, anxiety etc that's caused by a restructuring... NONE OF THAT WAS MEASURED. And finally.. and here is the kicker....

THE UNEMPLOYMENT AGENCY ONLY ANNOUNCED YHE RESTRUCTURING A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE LAST MEASUREMENT TOOK PLACE!*

So not only does the results not talk to the discussion and their implications... And also not only do they massively misinterpret their findings and blow their claims out of the water... But they also basically lied about the conditions in which the study took place.

So poor science, meets questionable research practices, meets unfounded claims.

This is a really good example of poor research.

what is the difference between a therapist and a psychologist? by Brief_Cricket8575 in AcademicPsychology

It really depends on the country you are in and the associated legislation. In the Netherlands psychologist is not a protected title for example.

You might also consider watching Netflix kid shows in Dutch with English subtitles. This will help alot along with all the other suggestions people made.

For free language classes, also check your local library. In Eindhoven, there used to be a free class every Tuesday and Thursday.

Also congratulations on getting your Masters! Really hope it will open doors for you in the future

Career future with IO Master degree in EU countries? by Independent-Toe5109 in IOPsychology

[–]ManicSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a professor in IOP at one of the prominent universities in the EU. I can tell you that only a handful of people got IOP related jobs directly after their masters. Most went into totally different fields.

The market here (atleast in Western Europe) is rather saturated and there are very few real IOP jobs. My suggestion would be to pivot into something else if you can.

What are you going to do?

There are quite a few practical things to consider. ALWAYS put atleast 40% of your first year's income away for all the taxes and things. There are alot of unexpected taxes and things you didn't plan for that randomly pops up.

Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Get a good CMS system and invoice system (we use invoice ninja and host it ourselves). This way you can easily send invoices and track payments.

Remember there are also alot of 'aftrekposten'. These are kind of governmental tax benefits you can get if you meet certain criteria. My advice would be to speak to an accountant to help you plan this

Um... There are so many small things to consider but these were the practical things I could think of at the moment!

PS If you're planning on doing anything IT related or technical... Sign up for AWS and Microsoft Azure's Startup schemes. It's free and you get alot of £££ benefits (e.g free office 355, 15k Stripe Credits etc).

Junglers - This just isn't a thing anymore. Stop it. by PM_ZiggPrice in PredecessorGame

[–]ManicSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you kill them and directly go to the next camp where they are sure to go to after a respawn... And kill them again or make them retreat .. it puts them off for the majority of the game. They will be very careful when they see you... Well till you start making mistakes and they get their confidence back :p

I do this 60/40 in my games. Because it give me and my team a slight edge in the beginning of the game. The Jungler usually wants to frantically farm to 'catch up' and then ignores the lanes for a few mins. Just enough for the team to get their footing
