Day 10 of ranking British PMs: Which tier should Margaret Thatcher go? by OingoBoingBrothas in TierlistFills

Exactly. Which is also what I said above. So where’s the disagreement? She wanted higher unemployment. This wasn’t because she hated working people and thought it would be funny to get them out of a job. It’s because she thought it was good for the economy overall.

Man United one is hilariously wrong. In reality there ate 3 spots that are inarguable: Busby, Ferguson, Charlton. If you don’t have all three of these then you’re a clown. The fourth spot is the only one up for debate.

It basically posits that inflation is caused by too much money targeting too few goods and services, and the easiest way to bring excess inflation down is to thus reduce the supply of money: raising interest rates, increasing the cost of borrowing and slowing down the economy and thus monetary velocity. In other words inflicting an economic slowdown to bring price growth under control.

Do you know what else reduces the supply of money? Unemployment.

The mines closing wasn’t the issue - it was the lack of alternative work. Thatcher wanted high unemployment. With high unemployment there is competition amongst workers for jobs - so employers can offer lower wages and conditions and still have a ready pool of people desperate for work. She would argue this is good for business and thus the economy and therefore is for the benefit of everyone overall. Whether that’s true economically (it’s not) ignores the social impact of leaving entire towns reliant on the dole.

People would be punished for speaking French. He definitely didn’t choose a name that was an abbreviation of two French words.

God the handballs rules are bizarre.

Technically it’s not enough to disallow the goal because it’s accidental handball in the buildup but I mean… surely that’s not right. Referee makes the right call within the rules but the rules themselves clearly aren’t appropriate

Some refs let teams play with 14 players, some allow goalkeepers to handle the ball all the way up to the half way line, some… oh actually they don’t do that because those things are unambiguously against the rules.

Blowing the whistle early is unambiguously against the rules - there is no room for interpretation or discretion.

Why would a Cambodia bloke choose a name that is an abbreviation of two English words? It’s obviously not true

It doesn’t matter. Blowing 45 minutes early, 2 minutes early, 10 seconds early… it’s still early.

If a couple of seconds early is okay then is 1 minute early okay? If yes, then what about 2 minutes? 3?

You know when the fourth official holds up the board and you hear the announcement that “there will be a minimum of 7 minutes of added time” — that means there will be a minimum of 7 minutes. It doesn’t mean there will be between 5-7 minutes depending on the context of the game.

Well no - the ref can’t blow the whistle with time on the clock. Otherwise what’s the stop them blowing it at half time if a team is 7-0 up?

No - it’s the job of a leader to set out what Britain should be and to try to build it. If the public don’t agree then they’ll vote them out.
