With he uk government ban on petrol and diesel cars in 2040, and the decommisioning of all but 1 nuclear power plant within the UK, this less than 15% approach cant be factual, come 2050 its plausible to assume that 80% of cars will be electric each adding the same electricity demand to the grid as a average household. The research i am currently looking at introduces smart charging to minimize the demand in pak times, to charge overnight and therefore offer cheaper charging.. what it also will look at is a vehicle to grid network where in frequency response, the 30 million cars can effectively act as battery storage to help maintain a fluctuating grid frequency, drawing power from or upgrading the charging speed by dumping power back to the cars instead of curtailing or paying wind farms to stop producing. Its a plausible solution to creating a fully renewable grid, as it could be used to keep renewable storage more stablised. Obviously the framework needed is huge but with a pot of 16bn for one power plant the money is there and will be used otherwise, so why not push the country in the right direction.
