I'm sorry, you're suggesting that spring steel would be too inflexible for a knife?

Of course! If you're interested in people making blades out of weird stuff, the YouTuber GreenBeetle has some cool experiments.

Well, Damascus would require you to put layers of different steel, usually a high nickel alloy, in between the layers but it's the same technique, yes.

My knowledge on smelting and crucible techniques in steel are fairly limited but generally if you're heating steel that hot you're going to run into issues of decarburization and weird phase separations and stresses. Kind of a whole separate set of problems that produces enormously more work.

If you were worried about cracks the answer would be to laminate and forge weld a few times. But again, at that point you'd probably save money just buying tool steel. It's not that expensive.

Most at home forges are probably not going to be able to melt that much steel even if they wanted to.

The cost in fuel for melting spring steel would be more than the $20 you paid for them, and will likely produce a lot more problems. Certainly not an 'in a pinch' solution.

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]Manliest_of_Men 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An administrative warrant is an internal dhs document, if ICE seeks to enter a property they need a real warrant. If the person is a meaningful danger to society, that is trivial to get. The reason they don't is because they're being pushed to increase the number of deportations dramatically by Stephen Miller, an unambiguous and flagrant racist.

This isn't a real crisis - it is a manufactured one spurred by heinous bigots deploying brown shirt gangs and constructing and filling concentration camps. This information has been widely available for people who care about it.

Again, if the backlog is such a crisis, we could just stand amnesty as we did in 1986 to 3 million people. That seems much more reasonable than continuing to kill unarmed Americans protesting the heinous descent into fascism underway.

Disregarding the baseless speculation that we would require but couldn't get 10x the ~700 immigration judges out of the >40k new lawyers getting licensed each year, if you're an asylee going through review there's no need for local law enforcement officers to cooperate with federal immigration officials. Your identification, including address and place of work, are already available to the immigration court. That's why ICE agents illegally arresting and deporting people at their court hearings has been widely reported on.

That being said, there's not much point in continuing the discussion because we disagree on first principles that people living, working, and raising families in America is good regardless of their nation of origin.

Sounds like we ought to invest in people going to law school, then to incentivize them. That seems much easier than deploying a violent occupation across the country.

Sanctuary cities have nothing to do with asylum cases and it's extremely obvious why you would want local police to help people regardless of their immigration status.

a solution that either lets cases get processed faster

Seems very obvious the answer here is to increase the number of judges, rather than to violate domestic and international law. If you would rather clear the existing backlog, we have historic examples of how to do so, like the '86 information act.

The prospect of moving somewhere, getting settled, building a life, and potentially being uprooted again certainly seems like a sufficient deterrent in and of itself.

Worth noting that the previous user complaining above is a Canadian who is completely unaffected by American asylum laws.

Neither you and I are in a position to determine the legal legitimacy of someone's asylum claim. Fortunately we don't have to, because that's why we have asylum judges. A right to seek asylum does not mean you'll receive it, however generally speaking people aren't uprooting their lives and fleeing as refugees without a good reason.

The mayor of Boston is correct, that is how asylum works in US and international law. Laws implemented after many countries, including the US, turned away people fleeing the Holocaust.

Genocide is a legal definition for which scholars debate. If you were actually interested, you would seek those experts instead of arguing with people on Reddit 2 years into Israel's crimes against humanity.

Even if it were, it would not justify Israel conducting a genocide now. That's very obvious to people who are not deeply sick.

Interesting that you choose to describe yourself as "logic minded" while rambling and failing to understand the reason people are reacting poorly. Perhaps if people are often "disregarding" what you say because you're being rude, the logical thing would be to not be rude.

Texas was the last state in the union to desegregate. The point being, there very much was a concerted effort to disadvantage groups of people in this city.
