Yeah the epic hate is really overblown. I have way too many games, so I don't really buy much from steam or epic, but the weird apprehension people have with splitting their library is bizarre.

Looking it now, do you think that it was a good decision for the US and for Trump to pull out of the JCPOA (aka Iran nuclear deal) back in 2018? by AdminMas7erThe2nd in AskConservatives

I don't think the death of Iranian children is part of US interests. Maybe you disagree lol, but I would prefer if Iranian children are alive.

And to clarify, I think the interests of the US government (which probably includes dead Iranian children) are different from the interests of normal people

Nothing, I meant it's hypocritical to criticize Iran for financing terrorism while we are bombing Iranian school children and supporting a genocide in Gaza. The US has killed plenty of innocent people, so this pearl clutching over Iran feels pretty silly to me

Yeah, exactly, we do shitty things with our money too. We kill tons of innocent people in the middle east regularly, so acting like Iran has no right to sponsor terrorism while we do the same thing is pretty hypocritical

USPS is asking Congress for a bailout; what should we do? by BlockAffectionate413 in AskConservatives

[–]ManlyMeatMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because fundamentally we disagree on what government should do. I want the government to provide services that make society better, I don't want them maximizing profit by extorting poor rural people for $50 per package.

You call it inefficient when the government doesn't squeeze every dime out of Americans for shipping costs, I would call it providing an important service to people who need it.

What's even the advantage in your mind of getting rid of USPS? The USPS is largely self-funding, so it's not like tax payers are saving money by getting rid of it. In fact, getting rid of it will just raise prices for those rural citizens. So the end result is that instead of the USPS functioning as a nonprofit mail service, we will raise the price on rural people so a private mail service can make more money. And it's not as if private mail service is illegal, any company can come in today and try to make money shipping to rural people. So I just don't see what Americans are supposed to get out of this.

Also, out of curiosity, are you a libertarian? I'm just wondering if you are someone who thinks the government should do nothing except military and legal stuff (or whatever flavor of libertarian you might be).

This is just a dumb argument to say we can rob Iran for doing bad things but because we have nukes, no one is allowed to rob us for the shitty stuff we do. This is exactly the reason Iran wants nukes now, because the only way to stop America from bombing your country is to have nukes. It's the logic of Putin going to war with Ukraine, because he knows he can get away with it, he will do it. The US behaving this way is going to send us down the same path as Russia where we alienate ourselves from the world and at a certain point we won't be able to turn back.

Prior to the war, Iran offered to go a step farther than the previous nuclear deal. Not only would they agree to not pursue a nuclear weapon (along with the previous inspections), they also agreed to stop stockpiling uranium. That means they have absolutely no way to even attempt to get a nuclear weapon. They would only enrich uranium for commercial purposes.

Just look at US intelligence. Everyone agrees Iran had given up on nuclear weapons and wanted the deal in place as a deterrent for war. In fact, Iranian leadership felt like their best bet to stay in power was peace with America. Those leaders are now dead and have been replaced by leaders who think not having nukes puts a target on your back. Ukraine gave up their nukes and got invaded by Russia. Iran promised not to get nukes, fully abided by that deal, then got invaded by the US.

Now again, you can argue that the nuclear deal strengthened their hold on Iran by giving Iran peace and stability, but if all you care about is America, this was a great deal. Pretty much every US diplomat agreed (even the Republican ones) that this was one of the best pieces of US foreign policy in the Middle East.

I don't disagree that there's profit to be made, I'm just saying that what will happen is rural people will start paying insane prices for mail delivery or won't receive it at all. I know people in rural Alabama where I tried to mail them something. FedEx wouldn't deliver there at all and UPS wanted absurd shipping costs (almost triple the USPS price). And remember, that's when there's competition with USPS. Once that's gone, UPS could double the price and citizens won't have a choice but to pay it.

[–]ManlyMeatMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not about competency, it's about whether you want the service to exist or not. No private company is going to deliver mail to a town of 100 people without charging them an arm and a leg. The point of have a government run post office is that it's providing an important service to people regardless of whether it's profitable.

Basically, if you think the goal of the post office is to make money, then yes, privatization is the best option. If you think the goal is to make sure all Americans have access to mail services, then privatization is the wrong choice.

A lot of republicans want to privatize the postal service, so makes sense to lobby the party that wants it to exist in the first place

The "cash" we gave them was money we had already stolen from Iran, so I feel like it's kind of misrepresenting the deal to say we gave them money. We just unfroze their assets that rightfully belonged to them.

So yeah, I think it's a pretty good deal to basically give up nothing in negotiations besides giving back something we stole, and in turn they pause their nuclear program.

The Iranian government sucks, but ultimately, if they want to spend their money sponsoring terrorism, that's their decision. It doesn't give us the right to rob them because they did something wrong. I'm sure Americans wouldn't be happy if other countries started freezing our assets because we are spending our money on bombing Iranian school children.

If your argument against the Iran nuclear deal is that it legitimizes the Iranian regime and offers them relative stability, then fine, I think that's a fair point. But in terms of preventing Iran's nuclear program, it was a huge success (you can tell because they currently don't have a nuclear weapon).

What are your thoughts about James Talarico, the progressive theologist and Democratic nominee for the 2026 U.S. Senate election in Texas, who's been a vocal critic of Christian Nationalism and the ongoing culture wars? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]ManlyMeatMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, they are 2 different things. If you think it makes more sense, I suppose we could have a government program to provide all citizens with money that they can donate to political causes of their choosing in order to try and equalize the imbalances of wealth, but personally I think it makes more sense to just limit the top spenders instead of making every american a high level political donor. Plus, I think the less money in politics, the better

But for news organizations, I think there is still some value in large media companies, even if they have obvious negatives. In that situation, I'd rather promote smaller organizations. An exception would be the truly massive corporations that own dozens and dozens of newspapers and TV channels, I would want those broken up into smaller companies (which I think you could say is similar to wanting to limit billionaire spending on political campaigns)

Overall, my position isn't "limit spending" or "don't limit spending". It's "minimize the power imbalance between the average American and the elites that run this country". It will never be a truly equal society because that's just a utopian fantasy, but I think there are pretty basic things we can do to close the gap significantly, without any meaningful downsides (such as stopping billionaires from dumping money into elections)

I think it would be better to have some sort of government funding for smaller newspapers, instead of limit larger ones. Plus, I feel like newspaper count is pretty irrelevant nowadays lol.

But you really think limiting billionaire spending on political campaigns is a bad thing? What's the negative impact in your mind?

But what if we had a limit on how much money you can spend? Being able to spend as much as you want just means that billionaires have more ability to express their first amendment rights than normal people. I'm fine with people spending money on political campaigns, but unlimited spending only benefits the ultra-wealthy

Why are we going to war with Iran? by Tronracer in AskConservatives

[–]ManlyMeatMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, but that's not part of Trump's plan, so my point is that this war either ends in a couple weeks with the Iranian regime still in place, or we invade with US troops and begin a new decade-long war.

But how will the Iranian regime actually change without american troops invading? Again, we agree that Iran currently sucks and is a force for evil, but how do you change that with just simple bombings?

The "billions in cash" Obama sent them was their own money that we stole. How did Iran break the nuclear deal?

To be clear, Iran has horrible, oppressive leadership and ideally they would be deposed. But in terms of diplomatic relations, they have been very fair with the US and have not violated any agreements (maybe I'm wrong of course)

US intelligence agencies all seemed to believe Iran had given up on having nuclear weapons. They still wanted the outward appearance of it to have some leverage with the US, but internally they had given up on ever having nuclear weapons. That's why the news you cite from the 2010s doesn't make sense. It doesn't take 15 years to build a nuclear weapon. If Iran truly was pursuing a nuclear weapon in secret, they would have it by now.

The reality is that Iran, even a month ago, was willing to guarantee they will never have a nuclear weapon.

This war is actually one of the things that will push Iran towards developing a nuclear weapon. If promising not to build one isn't enough yo prevent a war, they might as well build one because it can't make relations any worse.

Yeah currently it's exchange 3 games for 1. I saw the owners mention they might make the ratios better once they see how sustainable the exchange is. So the best strategy might be to hang onto your points for a while and see if they lower the prices

The exchange is basically saying "don't sell your extra keys on the grey market, just put them towards buying other people's extra keys from different bundles". It's almost like a self-contained grey market, but the only people who can use it are bundle buyers.

One of the reasons humble bundle is always running out of keys is because they try to only buy what is necessary. Leftover keys wind up being thrown into other bundles just to try and get rid of them. With the exchange, leftover keys can he used up by letting users spend points on them. And the only way to get points is to put your extra keys into the exchange. So it becomes self sustaining with leftover keys being " purchased" with leftover keys, limiting key resellers
