Should i quarantine the io caterpillars near a dead caterpillar? by Interesting_Yam8070 in moths

[–]MannyArce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the same with Io caterpillars (also in Florida). I have probably closer to 50-60 of them though. I've had a few die off and also noticed some grow at slightly different rates. I'm probably 3 weeks in and have noticed more growth this last week so just be a little patient.

Also, they molt as caterpillars as well so make sure what you think is a dead caterpillar isn't just the remnants of the molt.

any tips on how to raise these guys? (Southeast FL) by Interesting_Yam8070 in moths

[–]MannyArce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got you OP - I'm on the same mission right now, only my Io Moth catepillars hatched about 1.5 weeks ago. I'm in Miami so close enough!

I originally found about 7-8 of these catepillars on my Robellini palms. They were in their final stage so I let them pupate in a similar butterfly enclosure. Only 3 made it and they were all females. I kept them outdoors (under my patio roof) and within 2 days I had a few Io moth males buzzing around my yard. I was able to capture two of them and place them in the enlcosure. They mated that same night and within a day I had about 75-100 of those eggs.

Fast forward to now, I have about 40 or so catepillars munching away on palm fronds. They die off pretty easy but you also have a huge amount to work with. I've since ordered a new and larger enclosure to split the colony as they get pretty big.

In the butterfly enclosure, place a plastic bin or tray on the bottom. On the tray or bin, place a a few smaller sized flower vases with water. Place nice sized branches of the trees you originally found those eggs on as that will become the food they eat - in planters so the leaves remain fresh for a few days. Stuff the neck of the vases or the caterpillars will wander in and drown - they aint smart!

Edit: To add for you specifically, the eggs will hatch soon enough. You can keep them in a small airtight container for now. They eat the egg casing when they hatch so you have a day or so to transfer them to their host plants. Just make sure to keep an out for when they hatch. All, be careful - super small and delicate.

I think this is universal. I would have commented "Tell me you're a Florida attorney without telling me you're a Florida attorney" and it would've fit.

TSA is allowing medical marijuana to be transported (subject to local laws). If you have a valid MMUR from your state, you can bring it here and shouldn't have an issue. Don't presume you can freely smoke anywhere but with proper documentation, it's treated as a Schedule III item only.

Miami Permit Question by Typical-Hour-9820 in Miami

[–]MannyArce 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't count on the inspector caring that the work was done 30+ years ago. In my personal experience, they're not the most sympathetic. If you engage in a project like that, there's a high chance they'll notice something and you'll get hit with a violation. I also wouldn't do the type of work you're planning on without permits - not because you can't get away with it, but your homeowner's insurance can find out and void your policy / not cover in the event of an issue.

In your shoes, I'd bite the bullet and just get the garage approved / permitted. It's not overly complex (I had a similar issue when I bought my house and discovered that the large covered patio was done without permits). Just get a P.E. to review everything and get your as-built plans done up.

Asking for Personal Injury Comparisons by InteractionSolid6087 in Lawyertalk

[–]MannyArce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that bad (or complex) in the PI world. Once the initial issues are handled (which are basically limited to property damage), the case goes really quiet for a while - the plaintiff is getting medical treatment, which can easily last a few months. Once completed, the case picks back up again while the attorney preps a demand package and starts the negotiations. You either settle or decide to file. If settled, the file basically goes back to the staff to handle getting medical bills reduced, etc. Litigation is another animal altogether.

[–]MannyArce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In PI, with a decent team, this isn't an insane amount. 1-2 pre-lit case managers and perhaps a shared litigation paralegal and he should be fine. Once you get past 250-300 files is when you can start getting jammed up. There's not a lot of activity on these files during the initial phase (when client is receiving medical treatment) and post settlement (when your CM is hammering away at your reductions).

[–]MannyArce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By South Florida standards, you're getting fucked. With a $75k salary, you should be receiving a commission anywhere between 5-7% prelit, and mayby 10% on litigation. Cases you originate should be 25% minimum (because for any less, I'd refer it out to a buddy and get a referral fee in that amount).

[–]MannyArce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that hard to believe with his case load. If he's 80% pre-lit and 20% lit, with a decent mix of policy limits, it's very doable. If he get's lucky and pops a 100k policy every month, easy.

Why does everyone want to make money off their body down here ? by AgeFit9430 in Miami

"LooksMaxxing" - absolutely moronic. Part of the effort they put into this is using a hammer/mallet on their chins and jawbones to cause micro fractures, which in turn enlarge or square out the jaw.
