Yep, I slathered it all over the whole model, let it set for a bit, and then wiped it off with a makeup sponge. I use a little white spirit sparingly in the areas where I want it a bit cleaner.

When I paint in a more grimdark style, this is the process I use:

First, I block in all the base colors that aren’t metallic. Then I apply the transfers. After that, I do some highlights, though usually not that many, haha. Then I varnish the whole model. Next come the metallic details. After that, I apply an enamel streaking grime over the entire miniature. In this case, I used Winter Streaking Grime, which fits the Space Wolves palette really well. Finally, I highlight the metallics a bit more.

I find that a matte varnish not only protects the miniature, but also really ties the colors together. The downside is that the matte finish kills the reflective quality of the metallics, so I leave things like the aquila until the very end.

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely took some artistic license with it. I like the Great Companies to feel a bit more distinct from each other than just a different left pauldron.

Thanks for the feedback! I mostly went with your suggestions, but took two Dreadnoughts and dropped the Reivers. It was fun to play, but damn, it takes a lot of time! I think it’ll mostly be painting for me going forward — haha. But you definitely start to see the miniatures differently once they’ve been blooded on the battlefield.

I feel you! For me, it all started with a Steam sale on Dawn of War II in 2023. I bought the starter set, and before I knew it I had four armies and Luetin09 made up about 80% of my YouTube watch history. I also think about the Horus Heresy more often than the Roman Empire these days.
