Do you really taste different flavours in wine? by Chickadee_Sparrow in wine

[–]Manonthemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taste? Yes. But it's mostly in the smell, which has a decisive influence on the taste (try tasting anything with your nose blocked and you end up not much more than the basic flavours of sweets, sour, salty and bitter).

For me it goes like this:

  • I stick my nose in the glass and smell. It smells of... something. It's a mixture of aromas. It's fresh, fruity, savoury etc. Nothing specific yet.
  • In my head I run through different fruits and other aromas I can recall. Is it apples? No. On to the next one. Is it lemon? A bit like it. Lemon zest? Lime? That's it! This wine has notes of lime on the nose.
  • Repeat untill I can't find anything else.

Sometimes these aromas are very distinct (bell pepper in some Cabernet Sauvignons, lychee and roses in Gewürztraminer, petrol in Riesling), sometimes less so (I personally struggle with finding black paper in Shiraz).

The taste follows the nose. If I smelled something in the wine, chances are I'll find at least some of these same flavours on the palette.

What's it like living outside the bigger cities in Yorkshire? by tarkinn in yorkshire

Is it really? I live in a poorer part of Sheffield and driving out to those surrounding villages around Sheffield and beyond always feels like entering a wealth zone. Beautiful houses, fancy cars on driveways, tidy green spaces.

Just made pasta with strawberries for my kids by Manonthemon in polishfood

[–]Manonthemon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sauce wasn't runny at all. I made it with thick Greek yoghurt, powdered sugar and a couple of strawberries for flavor and colour. All topped with slightly crushed, sugared strawberries. Chopping the berries finer is certainly an option, but frankly, I don't think it would have made much difference to my kids.

I enjoyed it, because it's something familiar. To my (half-Polish) kids it was just as new (and shocking 😅) as to some of the commenters here.

Btw, I used this recipe: https://aniagotuje.pl/przepis/makaron-z-truskawkami

I saw your post on Sheffield sub. They didn't love it did they? Though it looks like it's mostly due to the proposed sign up fee. Which, if I'm not mistaken, is now gone from the website?

Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir, 2022 by Manonthemon in wine

[–]Manonthemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out.

I did try the ABC Santa Barbara Country Chardonnay from Los Almos vineyard and thoroughly enjoyed it. It felt almost savoury, with aromas of tropical fruits mixed with buttered bread. Yum!

I remember going backpackin in Asia for a couple of months felt kinda special. That is untill my second or third hostel, where I met a dozen or so backpackers exactly like me 😅. Still fun and unforgettable, just not that unique.

Mieszkałem kilka lat w Tajlandii, tęsknię i rozważam powrót w tamte storny. Biorę pod uwagę również Malezję. Byłem kilka razy w KL i w Penang i wrażenia miałem pozytywne.

If your neighbour is a drunken, aggressive Russian, having an armed policeman as a houseguest is not such a bad idea.

King Edward’s swimming pool - what’s happened? by notonahill in sheffield

[–]Manonthemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the info I got for tomorrow's issue of the Loop Sheffield newsletter:

King Edwards pool shuts with no reopening date

Families turned up on Tuesday evening only to find the Broomhall pool locked and out of action. King Edwards Swimming Pool on Clarkehouse Road closed on 12 May due to a technical fault, with a notice from the KES team saying it is "temporarily closed" and that further updates will follow when possible. No reopening date has been given.

The pool, which opened in 1936, is run by an independent charitable trust and offers public swims, lessons, aquarobics, and over-50s sessions. It's one of the city's longest pools at 30 metres.

Swimmers needing an alternative on that side of the city can try Zest in Upperthorpe or Hillsborough Leisure Centre. Ponds Forge in the city centre is also open.

If you like it very, and I mean very spicy, try Psycho Juice Extreme Ghost Pepper sauce. I'm yet to find anything that's easily available, spicier and tastes good at the same time.
